I had diarrhea too and my surgeon said it was normal. If you are concerned, though, you should call your doc. Make sure you stay hydrated. The diarrhea should only last a couple days. If you have a high fever or too much pain, then call your doc or go to the ER.
Please note: I AM NOT A DOCTOR. If you want medical advice, talk to your doctor. Whatever I post, there is probably some surgeon or other health care provider somewhere that disagrees with me. If you want to know what your surgeon thinks, then ask him or her. Check out my blog.
If you aren't peeing much or your urine is really dark colored, that means you're getting dehydrated.
You can also do the "pinch test." You gently pinch up a little skin on the back of your hand. When you let it go, it should snap back to normal right away. If it stays pinched up for a few seconds, you're dehydrated.
If you start getting really dizzy and weak and nausous, you're probably dehydrated. But since you just had major surgery, you may be a bit dizzy and weak anyway.
As long as you're getting a good amount of water in, you'll probably be fine. But if you think you might be dehydrated or something else might be wrong, call your doc. He gets paid well to take calls on the weekends.

I had my RNY on Tuesday 5/1, came home on Thursday 5/3, and on Friday 5/4 I started diarrhea that worsened through the weekend. I saw the surgeon's nurse practitioner on Monday and she said it sounded like lactose intolerance. I switched from cow's milk to almond milk (unsweetened, enriched) to make my protein shakes with and I felt an immediate difference. Within two days those stomach issues cleared up. (Just a note- Even though my protein powder is made of whey protein, mixing the cow's milk with it must have been too much lactose. I also tried lactaid chewables for one shake before switching away from cow's milk and it didn't help at all.)
Don't hesitate to call your surgeon if you get additional symptoms or symptoms of dehydration. Good luck!

I have been kind of on the same boat as you... I wasn't having any bm's until day 3 when I had such a small one it shoudn't have counted. Then 3 days later again. On the 6th day or so I did have a decent bm... but I have not experienced the diarrhea (sp?) my doctor actually promised... He is surprised... but, as long as you are passing gas and not bloating or distended I'd give it a few more days. But, of course... ASK your doctor!!! I am only going by my own personal experience!
Best of luck to all !!!
P.S. Hi, spotcat6 !!!
