Random Poll o' the Week: About moms...
I know, I'm prolly the last one you'd expect to start a thread about Mother's Day or mothers but the day is coming up and I can either embrace it or sit around feeling depressed. But then this morning I got a text from God (He texts me quite often) saying the following: "Make a joyful noise to the Lord!"
And that made me smile so I shouted "Alleluia!" which woke the children, who thought I was nuts. But His texts seem to always come at a time when I need to hear a word of encouragement and that put me in the right mood to do this poll.
(No...I am not kidding...I get texts from God. I can show them to you if you like...;)
So here's my poll:
1. Please share your very first memory of your mother.
2. Please share your the funniest memory you have of your mother.
3. Please share a memory that makes you proud to be the child of YOUR mother.
4. Please complete the following statement: "Man, mom was right when she said..."
Happy Mother's Day to us moms. Whethery your motherhood be by giving birth, adopting or "adopting," our roles are so important in the world! Take a moment to celebrate!

Here's my answers.
1. When I was maybe four my whole family (at the time my mom, my grandmother who would pass away in just a few short months, my grandpa and my mom) went on vacation to a place called "Host Farms." I remember being so excited about it. They had pony rides and a pool. I remember my mom swimming and saying, "C'mon, Nik, I'll take you for a ride!" So I got on her back. She told me to pinch my nose with one hand, hold around her neck with the other and close my eyes. Trusting her completely, I did. And she dove under the water. I was frightened but I knew my mom wouldn't let anything happen to me. That was a good vacation.
2. Um...probably after I gave birth each time and she did what I call the "****a Kinte" thing. She believed that the first words a baby heard defined their whole lives. So after they were born, had the cord cut, Apgar's administered and whatnot she took them aside and cradled them and said, "You are the descendant of kings and queens and noble tribesmen. Only God is greater than you." Which would ordinarily be a touching moment. Except when you are hopped up on epidurals it seems hilarious.
3. My mother had 30 years clean and sober when she died. I was always phenomenally proud of the fact that she pulled herself from the grip of addiction. Battling through it every day myself I can hardly imagine 30 more days sometimes, much less 30 years.
4. My mother was always right when she said that my spirit was too energetic for that big body I was carrying around. She was my biggest supporter of WLS. She'd always say "you were born gorgeous. But now I see that you FEEL gorgeous so you are a success."
Happy Mother's Day, mom!

That's really beautiful.
One of my favorite things ever is a Jewish baby naming ceremony. When a baby is born and a name is chosen, the Rabbi will take the baby under a talit (a prayer shawl) and bless him/her, because every new life is a new opportunity for God to work miracles through that child. (or, if you're Orthodox, which I'm not, for that child to be the Messiah). The blessings and wishes of goodness and joy are so beautiful, it makes me cry every time.
I'm a mush for babies. *snif*

Actually Nik, you're the FIRST person I'd expect to start a thread like this; you are a loving person, who obviously loved her mother, and I feel certain you will celebrate your love for her, each and every day! You know she's watching you from above sending you her love right back!
My memories of my mom are her letting me fingerpaint all over the walls of the kitchen (she was going to repaint anyway, so why not, she thought)
Funniest moment; Mom skipping down the mall, singing (just because she could!)
I am proud to follow in her footsteps with my profession
Man my mom was right when she said; it takes such little effort to be kind, and the rewards you get from doing so; beyond compare.
Happy Mother's Day to one and all!

1. I remember my mom putting me on our horse, Lady, when I was 2.
2. My mom was a big goof but the funniest thing I remember was when she took a pile of my friends to a summer theater play and got pulled over for speeding. i don't know why, but it just makes me laugh. that cop was so freaked out by all the kids she had in the van.
3. My mom did not believe in God at all, yet she insisted that my brother and I go to Sunday School and church so we could decide for ourselves.
4. "Man, mom was right when she said..."Bea kid while you can. Being an adult is hard work." Amen to that.

This will be my first Mother's Day without my Mom.....she celebrated her best day ever last July!
Happy Mothers Day to all of you "Moms".......if you gave birth, adopted, fostered, are a man and you are the mom, or a teacher, any way that you are a "Mom". I hope you have a great weekend !
1. First memory......I am the type of person that doesn't remember much from my childhood....I didn't have a bad one, in fact I was blessed with loving parents that were married until "death do us part"...48 years....and I had siblings that I am still very close to. My first memories would be feeling loved.
2. Funniest memory....there are many...I lived walking distance from my Mom for 35 years....saw her almost daily. My Mom was a small, petite woman...never weighed over 125 her entire life (obviously I took after my Dad's side) ....about 30 years ago when people were putting 12x12inch mirror tiles on the ceilings in their bedrooms over the bed.....hmmmmmmm what were they thinking?? Anyway we were discussing this with a group of my friends and Mom popped up and said..."I wouldn't like that....I have enough wrinkles and those seams in the tiles would just add to them.".
3. Proud to be Mom's child......the tributes said at her funeral and all she accomplished in life...some of which I never even knew about.
3. Mom was right when she said...."life is too short to be miserable!!!"

Great post Nik.....
1. Please share your very first memory of your mother.
When our family was camping somewhere in the North Cascades. Our foster brother (he was probably around 4??) accidentally stepped in broken glass. My Dad was somewhere up ahead of us where he didn't know what was going on. I remember it being really scary 'cause all the blood. She was trying to help him and calm my sister and I down on her own.
2. Please share your the funniest memory you have of your mother.
My Mom is so damn stubborn. She has always done organic gardening even before it was popular, always did the canning and freezing for the winter etc. She also despises whiny girly, girls so we weren't allowed to act prissy. Anyway, my mom had picked some broccoli for dinner and it was the last time it could be used. It was about ready to flower. Anyway, she steamed it, put it on the table. I looked down as we were eating dinner and saw friggin WORMS on it. Just a couple white ones. I threw an absolute fit I was so grossed out. My mom being the way she is...stubborn as hell and pissed off because I was what she thought overreacting, said, "They wont kill you!!!' She proceeded to pick off the worms she found and continued to eat the broccoli. My sister and I could not believe she was doing that. We didn't eat broccoli for years after that stunt LOL We still laugh about it.
3. Please share a memory that makes you proud to be the child of YOUR mother.
My Mom is 78 now. She has always been far ahead of her time. Even growing up when I did she taught me through example to be a strong, confident and smart woman. Not to ever rely on any man (even though she is in a loving marriage to my Dad and has been for 54 years now) She is not like women brought up in her era.
4. Please complete the following statement: "Man, mom was right when she said..."
So many things.......I cant pick one thing that stands out.

Love this! Im a total momma's girl!
1. Please share your very first memory of your mother.
Im not sure of the first memory, but I can clearly 'feel' how it feels to be sitting in her lap with my head on her chest.
2. Please share your the funniest memory you have of your mother.
When my dad passed away, I really took mom under my wing. He passed away in July and that October, I dragged her out to a Halloween party. Se dressed as "Baby Jane". Looked great. I made her go into the liquor store in full costume. She was SOOO embarassed! As part of her costume, she had toilet paper hanging out of her knee highs. A woman stopped her to tell her! OMG She wanted to curl up and die. The woman thought thats what she looked like all the time. Was so very funny.
3. Please share a memory that makes you proud to be the child of YOUR mother.
Very long story to this, but my mom had decided to leave my dad (one of the million times) and we were in the car driving to my grandma's house. I can remember her crying and looking at me and saying 'Ya know what? Its you and me against the world". I can see that clear as day. Its something I often say to myself. I told her that recently.
No worries about this story, it had a happy ending. took a while, but everything worked out.
4. Please complete the following statement: "Man, mom was right when she said..."
That I can do anything and Im stronger than I give myself credit for.
