COMPLETELY OT (and probably inappropriate for posting here) but have you seen this?
I nursed 2 of my 4 kiddos. One for 9 months when the dr advised me to stop due to her inadequate weight gain & the other for 6 months when it was clear that I wasn't producing enough. I did nurse in public. Personally, I wouldn't nurse a child who could get all of his/her nutrition from food. I didn't allow them to use bottles for a prolonged time either. It would bother me to see that 3 yo with a bottle.... so, he should be off the breast. Just my opinion.
I worked at a daycare and one of the mom's was still breastfeeding her 3yr old son. And he did indeed climb into her lap and whip it out himself for a snack, she never missed a beat in her conversation.
I'm all for breastfeeding in its context. This photo and the way some women openly flop out their breasts are offensive to me (even as a woman).

I haven't read all the replies to this, but I will.
let me just say i am a HUGE proponent of child led weaning. Both of my kids extended nursed. There are a TON of reasons why it is beneficial to both mother and child. nursing helps reduce the risk of breast cancer in the mother and provides THE best nutrients for children.
having said that, i think magazine covers like that aren't helpful to the cause

Um.....I'm all for bf'ing until about 18 months. After that (TO ME) it seems a bit weird. The kid in that photo is WAY to old to be bf'ing still. He should be on normal food where he can get 100% of the nutritional daily value he needs. I have a kid that same age and size and I personally could not imagine bf'ing him right after he's asked for a hot dog.
Actually there are things children get from breastmilk, such as antibodies that help protect them against many illnesses, that they CANNOT get from food at any age.

I've known quite a few parents who believe in child led weaning - i am one of them. NONE of them (that i know), do it for themselves. we did it because we believed it was in the best interest for our children. The benefits are huge for children. They are also good for the mother - like dramatically reducing breast cancer rates.
as a nation, our breastfeeding rates are one of the lowest worldwide. The *****commends breastfeeding for a minimum of 2 years.
I firmly believe it's every woman's choice and decision to feed their children how they believe is best. But I do not critize formula feeding mothers, and get greatly offended when people assume i extended nursed for some perverse pleasure. I did it to nuture my children.

I tried to breastfeed both of my kids. I barely made enough milk for them to get a sip at a time. I really felt like a complete failure, and some folks around me sure didn't help me feel any better.
So after trying and neither child getting adequate nutrition, the doc said to give 'em a bottle. So I did, and I took a whole lot of flack over that.
This kiddo on the cover seems a little old to breastfeed, but to each her own. I don't give a hoot one way or another if someone breastfeeds in public. And I kind of feel sorry for breastfeeding mothers when there isn't anywhere for them to quietly breastfeed out of the disapproving public eye.
I don't want to eat in the bathroom, and the kiddo probably doesn't either.

Good for you for trying. I am so sorry there were people who tried to make you feel bad for your actions. I've been around this debate for 7 years now and it can get nasty every time. I agree with you - people shouldn't make others feel bad for their choice with this.
i think everyone tries their best to be a good parent (for the most part, lets assume that anyway), and i think parents should support other parents.
