I have to wonder about the backlash on the kid when he's a little older.  Will his friends know that he was breastfeeding on the cover of Time when he was 3? Will he be mortified?

Ok, confession time.  I was one of those mothers.  I nursed my son until he was 3 1/2, not really by my choice.  I kind of felt is was his hostage.  I almost had him weaned when he was about 2 and then my daughter was born and a fresh, new supply of milk came in and he was happy.  Yes,  I nursed through my pregnancy and I nursed two babies.  La Leche league loved me, the rest of society, not so much. A kind of funny story.   For some reason my ex in laws would tell Jeffrey to go get some ***** when he was hungry, or whatever so that became his word.  Mothers know about the word.  That is what they call their baby's comfort source, like ba ba for bottle, binkie for the pacifier or blankie for their blanket.  His word was *****  We used it so much that we desenstized it so it didn't really sound that bad. So when he was about 1 1/2 we took him to Disneyland with my sister.  Jeffrey was running around being all unruly so I did what I always did when I wanted to settle him down.  I offered to nurse him.  I shouted out to him "You want some *****".  My sister, who was already horrifed that I was nursing a walking child in public about died.  She said to me "Uh, I don't think you want to be yelling that out in public".  I had completely forgot how it sounded.  Soon afterwards we came up with a new word for it.

Having a baby in the house I can say I fully support Breastfeeding for all of the standard reasons but also from a guys side will it gets me out of some feeding duties .  As I would say I got binkies not Bottles.

Now from a social stand point I find nothing wrong with this as my wife breast feeds when we are out and about but she does so with a cover.  She and I understand that this may not be something that everyone wants to witness for some reason or another so we do what we can to impose on others.

Now that being said I think when a kid has the ability to say "Yo mom whip them out I am hungry" it may just be time to end it.  At that point is the mother really doing it for the kid or for herself?

I have seen worst on the cover of magazines,I don't see her as a victim either, she pose for it, and I know got paid good for that pose :) I only breast feed my children until they were 2 years, that was enough for me :) well at least she is looking good doing it..

I don't care one way or another. A woman's body is hers, and she is free to make her own choices. Whether or not someone breastfeeds, or for how long, doesn't affect me in the slightest, so it's none of my business.

I couldn't breastfeed my first. My milk never came in. With my second, I got about 6 weeks before it disappeared. Would I have nursed longer if I could? Probably. I have no doubt that breastfeeding is preferable to formula, but both my children were raised on formula out of necessity and have done just fine with no major allergies or health issues.

We have enough women going around chastizing other women for their choices, lifestyles, and/or parenting style. The last thing we need is more scrutiny, and more opportunities for perfectly good mothers to feel like failures. To each their own. If something works out wonderfully for you, fantastic. But it might not be the best or even a possible option for someone else.

As for a boob on a magazine cover, oh my goodness, what is the world coming to? Not a boob! Lordy, my virgin eyes can't take it. But seriously, it bothers me how badly this country freaks out over a little nudity. Americans are (collectively speaking) the most prudish, uptight group of citizens (outside the bedroom, anyway), and sometimes it amazes me we're not all running around in burkas.

Nudity does not equal sex. The fact that so many people cannot separate the two is disturbing.

Just for giggles...

I don't have any children, but I think breastfeeding is a wonderful thing.  I have to tell you though, when I was a teen I went to babysit for someone at church and she was breastfeeding her 6 mo. I was absolutely floored when I saw her 3 year old run up and grab a tit...and yes it was just like this photo except she was sitting so he didn't need a stool.  She said he stopped until the baby came and then he started back.  It was a very awkard experience...to say the least.   I just thought is was odd, but that's just my opinion.

My personal opinion is breast feeding in public is fine, just cover your girls so my child does not see them. As for age to stop - When they are off the bottle, they should be off the nipple too! There comes a time when you have to wonder why are they choosing to continue breastfeeding a child who is old enough to drink form a cup. I think that the cover is disgusting & should have never been allowed to be published. Some perverts might get off on something like this! (just saying...) Cover your junk!

So would you recommend pumping breast milk and giving it to a child in a cup for a while, so they could still receive all the nutritional benefits and the antibodies to illnesses and stuff?  Those benefits are one reason some moms continue breastfeeding even if a child is old enough to drink from a cup.
