Oral Thrush, Low Immune System?
Geeze.
I've got three or four small sores/lesions in my mouth. A friend who's a relatively high-up-there-RN in San Diego said it sounded like oral thrush. She suggested rinsing with sal****er and eating yogurt. If she knew the amount of yogurt I consume.
She also suggested it could be a side effect of antibiotics or run down immune system. That's when all my bells went off. :( I've been having the worst time sleeping for the past three weeks, and my eating has been off (seems to run hand in hand with the sleeping problems). I also completely forgot I was a candida breeding ground prior to surgery.
So I did some poking around on WebMD just to find out what steps I could try at home. They had the same thing my friend suggested. I clicked the link to "medications", one over the counter remedy it suggested was Gentian violet. It's an antifungal. It also listed azole's. I remembered I had a fluconazole tablet from my last run of antibiotics. I always have one on hand and a refill (I never use the refill) just in case I get a yeat infection. Never occured to me this little experience qualifies as one. So...I took it. I also picked up Gentian violet.
What totally sucks is if I have to go into the doctor to wait for 45 minutes to be seen for five to be told the same thing I already know just to get a refill on the fluconazole.
"That'll be $78.00." Ching.
Anyways, my San Diego friend also said a low immune system was a side effect of the surgery. Is that true? I haven't really had any problems post-op (save a stricture early out). If that's true...ugh. That means I really have to hunker down on getting my sleep issues under control (yes, I take Ambien).
Well, thanks for letting me ramble.

thrush is a very serious thing and you cant just guess if you have it = it needs to seen because there can be several different things but I have to say the way you describe it, it doesnt sound like thrush and just being run down and not sleeping isnt the sign a weakened immuned system.
Thrush is either a very thick white coating on your tongue or if it gets worse it can get in your throat or even worse down your esophagus making it an emergency condition. It can also show up as a what they call a black hairy tongue and you would know if you have that. Sores in your mouth can be due to eating just from biting the side of your mouth and irritated from eating spicy foods, it can be the old fashioned cold sores people get inside your mouth. Your best bet is to go to your dentist to get it checked out - there are things that go on in the mouth that need to be checked and diagnosed properly and treated right away - you dont want to just ignore it incase it is something. Hopefully it isnt anything but if it is, you need to find out. Just like woman get HPV that causes cervical cancer, you can also get it in your mouth and it causes sores - the sooner you get it checked out the better off the outcome can be.
When they say a weakened immune system - they usually mean someone with cancer, aids, other immune system disorders - I have something called Common Variable Immune Deficiency which is when I dont have the antibodies to fight infections so I have to get a monthly IV to give me the antibodies so I get less infections. People on dialysis, people that are immediately post op or people on high dose steroids. I have read a few posts on here of newbies having thrush and the treatments are one of 2 things - either Diflucan pills for 1 week or you can take these lozenges that you suck on that is supposed to help get rid of it. the diflucan works systemically wear the lozenges just work locally. If you do think it might be thrush, you need to be seen by your PCP immediately to get diagnosed and treated - you dont want it to spread it into your throat or esophagus - your throat could close up from the swelling as well as the esophagus which could also close making breathing very difficult good luck and hope all goes well. I hope it turns out to be nothing
