Drinking after meals

Every now and again I slack off or eat something salty or dry and have some water afetr a meal. Could I have ruined my stoma? It isn't too often that i do it.. but maybe a few times a week? I am 5 months out. I have decided to cut the salty stuff out of my life for now so that I can focus on not drinking after a meal. Should I be concerned?

Likely your stoma is fine

What is at risk is a pattern of behavior that -- if you let it -- could become more and more frequent until the next thing you know you are drinking with all meals.

While I'm living proof that you CAN regain to a certain extent while keeping stringently to the no drinking with or after meals rule... it seems to me that nearly everyone with a SIGNIFICANT gain (25 - 100% of excess weight lost and then regained) tend to be those who have one common thread... they drink with their meals

Thanks for the reply. I have put a halt to the "drinking with meals" thing as of this week. It was starting to worry me. The last thing I want to do is ruin this whole thing.

I agree. The people I know "in-real-life" who drink with meals are no where near their goal weight.

Be careful it does not become a habit!!

I doubt that would ruin your stoma ... The main concern with drinking shortly after a meal is that it will flush the food out of your pouch and cause you to be hungry again sooner. That makes you eat more = more calories, which in turn can = weight gain down the road.

You are already planning on removing the root of the problem (the salty foods) so you should be fine. I am pre op so I'm sure a lot of the vets will have more useful input.

I know one of the ladies suggested ending your meal with a frozen grape to kind of clean the palate and keep you from getting thirsty until you can drink again. Others have suggested ending the meal with some watermelon, cantaloupe of another juicy fruit so that will help hold you over until you can drink.

I will have to try the grape thing if I do end up eating something salty. Thanks.

water also flushes you out and you dont absorb the necessary nutrients from the foods you body needs if you dont wait 30 minutes before and after to drink

No, water doesn't prevent you from absorb nutrients.  Water flushes food out of your pouch.  But you don't absorb many nutrients in your pouch anyway, you absorb them in your small intestine.  Water does NOT flush food out of your small intestine.

I didn't say anything about the pouch, what i said is basic. So to  If you drink water with your meal, you have chance of stretching your stomach or filling up with water instead of food and not getting the all the nutrients you can get......is what i meant

Bonnie, if you've had RNY, you have no stopper at the bottom of your pouch.  Liquids run right through it.  That's one reason we're so prone to dehydration after our surgery.

As such, drinking with your meal won't fill you up with water.  What it is more likely to do is to turn the food you've just chewed to a pulp into a heavy, mushy mess that could stretch your stoma (the opening where your intestines have been attached to your pouch).

Given that the pouch is made from the least stretchy part of your original stomach, mechanically it is almost impossible to stretch the pouch itself, but stretching the stoma IS possible, and can lead to a whole lot of bad things.
