And, a poll for those using Flintstones

I did not see the results, just Kelly's comments.  A low BUN (blood urea nitrogen test, which basically checks kidney functioning but can warn of other problems as well) result is actually better than a high BUN result since higher than normal levels can signal kidney distress or various heart problems.  A low result may indicate that you are not getting enough protein., which of course, would be very possible for someone with RNY and malabsorption. Were your protein results ok?  A seriously low BUN can also be caused by some serious health issues, but a slightly low level would not be cause for worry.

As with many lab results, women's levels are often a bit low when just compared to the "normal" levels provided by the lab because women's results tend to be lower than men's across the board and the "normal" ranges given by most labs do not distinguish between genders.

Okay thanks! I went thru it again and tried to make it more understandable but you had already answered my questions. Yeah, I figured my iron would be low. I menstruate and it comes very strong and for a long time, so I kinda figured that it would be low. Thank you again.

I am 7 years post op, taken Flinstones with Iron since day one and I have always had amazing labs and no problems at all. I even got pregnant 7 months post op. I only gained 7 lbs my pregnancy and delivered a healthy baby. He was born 8 weeks early but not due to anything related from gastric bypass, he was 5lbs 4oz and came home with us immediately. I have continued to take my Flinstones and am very happy with the results that I have had.

Great!  Can you tell me your vitamin A and selenium levels last time you had labs done?

I am due for blood work very soon and will test this out. Been doing as instructed and taking 2 flintstones per day since 2 weeks post-op, that and iron and also B-12. My doc does lots of blood work and I will just ask him why flintstones if I'm low on anything. Plan to switch when I run out BTW. But after 1st labs.

My doc recommended Flintstones and I take them.  I am only 3 weeks out, so obviously haven't had blood work done.  I mentioned in a previous post that I will be getting Vit A and selenium from food; meats, eggs, sunflower seeds, mushrooms, etc.  I think it is a poor assumption to assume a doctor is negligent in testing for Vit A or selenium because they recommend Flintstones.

I understand why it would seem like a poor assumption.  But it's not really just something I am assuming, based on no information.  I assume it because, every time I've asked people that take Flintstones, not one - not a single one - tells me their doc tests their vitamin A or selenium.  If you know of specific docs that recommend Flintstones and test for vitamin A and selenium, please let me know who they are.  I am happy to change my assumptions based on new facts.

I also realize you posted previously that you could get your vitamin A and selenium from food.  I hope that works well for you.  The ASMBS says we can't get enough nutrients from food, that's why we need specific vitamins and minerals in supplement form.

As I pointed out in my original reply (which is what Kelly responded to on the matter of docs not testing), even some surgeons who DON'T recommend Flintstones also don't check for Vit A or selenium, so I don't see that anyone was accusing doctors of being "negligent" for not running the tests... Just observing that, since those values are less commonly checked for across the board, it may explain why no one taking Flintstones has ever been able to supply their lab results for those two things.  I think you read in the "negligence" part.
