And, a poll for those using Flintstones

I've posted a similar poll a couple of times and never gotten responses.  I'd really like to see some responses but I'm very curious about how patients' labs compare when they use Flintstones as opposed to an adult multi that meets the ASMBS guidelines.

I promise not to tell you in this thread that you shouldn't be taking Flintstones.  If anyone wants to know why I don't recommend Flintstones, make a separate post or PM me and I'll be happy to talk about it.  But I want people to be able to respond to this poll without worrying about me arguing with them.

So, if you use Flintstones:

1.  What's your vitamin A level?

2.  What's your selenium level?

I ask about those two things because Flintstones doesn't have the recommended amount of vitamin A for us and they have no selenium.  So I'm wondering if people are able to maitain good levels of those things when they use Flintstones.

Thanks.

A hijack of sorts here;

 Funny timing Kelly. I just posted below, and am going to repost it here.    NOW BELIEVE ME EVEYONE, I am not telling anyone NOT to take Flintstones, but I am asking you to think about "why not take the other"   :D      In reality, it's everyone's choice of course.

Repost:

I'm going to put in my $2 worth  (that's right, I'm worth more than 2 cents :D

For all those taking Flintstones;

I loved the cartoon as a child,  but as an adult....I find it only so-so.

As a vitamin for me as an adult....I find it only so-so.

I too used a chewable for the first 2 years and 5 month, BUT I chose the Centrum chewable, because it contains more of the correct minerals and vitamins I, as an adult, need.....Flintstones doesn't.    If you need a chewable, why not take one geared toward adults?   It just makes good common sense in the end.   I have heard from too many people I know who have had this surgery, that they saw their levels start to tank after some months on the children vitamin, and I didn't want to go through that personally.

What would it hurt anyone to take the multi vitamin geared for your age?  After all, it is still a chewable.   Just a thought.   Perhaps ask your surgeons if they think Centrum chewables would be appropriate.  They may like to recommend Flintstones, but I think they'd be hard pressed to say Centrum would be worse.  ('cause it wouldn't be  :D

Ok, even though I haven't taken a Flintstone vitamin since shortly after they first came out waaaaay back when (my mother preferred other, less expensive, more complete vitamins), I am going to venture a guess that the surgeons *****commend them are not checking selenium or Vit A levels when they do labs.  That isn't intended as a slam against those surgeons; it is just based on the fact that even my surgeon (who does NOT recommend Flintstones) and does enough lab work that it requires more than a dozen cials of blood, does not check either one.

My PCP checks my Vit A once a year, though, along with some of the Bs other than B12 (which is the only B that my surgeon checks).  I have never, to my knowledge had my selenium level checked.

I'm guessing that too, which would explain why none of the people that use Flintstones never answer when I ask about these.  But several people have told me their labs are all great with Flintstones, and if they don't get them tested, they don't really know if they are great or not.

 When I went for my first post-op checkup, I didnt have any labs drawn. I just switched over to a regular multivitamin. I wont have labs drawn till september. My doctor does reccommend the use of flintstones chewables with iron during the first 6 weeks though.

As I am only 2 weeks out, I have not had labs yet. I have both the Centrum chewables and the Flinstones vitamins. I cannot tolerate the Centrum yet; it makes me nauseous. My doctor told me if I can't handle an adult MV to take Flinstones, as it is better than nothing. They are smaller, and I am not sure if that is the reason I can tolerate them at this point. and yes, I was told they do not have everything we need in them, but at the same time it is better than nothing according to my surgeon.

I agree it's better than nothing.  I wonder, though, why you and your doctor assume you can't tolerate any adult multivitamin just because you couldn't tolerate Centrum?

my doc has me on Flintstones as soon as I have surgery. I already bought them in bulk. I will try them, get labs done in the future and try to remember to let you know the results. They told me I will have to take them 3 times a day. I tried to stock up on vitamins because I don't dare do that with protein shakes. I'm only buying sample packs until after surgery. Protein powder is way too expensive if you don't like the taste.

I will be getting my 1 year labs done within the next month or so here. I have been taking flintstones since surgery, though will be switching over to an adult vitamin when my bottle runs out after reading the information provided here. Not sure why so many surgeons/Nuts recommend this when there are other chewable options geared toward adults its not like flintstones are that much cheaper?

I will post what my levels are when I get them.
