Are you afraid of your doctor?

Are you afraid of your doctor?  If so, which doctor - surgeon, PCP, something else?  Why are you afraid?  And if you're afraid of them, why do you keep seeing them?

It seems like I frequently see people post things like they are afraid to go to a doctor's appointment because they are afraid their doctor will be disappointed or will yell at them for not losing enough weight, or I see people post things like their doctor scolds them for not getting enough protein or taking their vitamins, and things like that.

I am not afraid of any of my doctors.  Occasionally I am not looking forward to an appointment because I know I've made some poor choices about my health and I don't like to hear my doctor tell me that.  For instance, in a couple of weeks I have an appointment with my psychiatrist, whom I was supposed to see a month ago, but I missed that appointment because I just didn't feel like going - and I did not call in advance to cancel it like I should have done.  He is not going to yell at me or scold me but he will remind me that it is important to keep my appointments, and he will probably want to know why I missed the last one and I don't have a good reason for it, so I'm not looking forward to that conversation.  But I'm not scared of him.

Sometimes I am afraid of a particular procedure I need to have done, but that's not because I am afraid of the doctor.

So, are you afraid of your doctor?

i think people are afraid to hear that they did something wrong and don't want to admit to doing it. they want their doctor to tell them it's okay, and are surprised when they don't so they say that they "yelled at" or "scolded" them. i'd be very surprised if even a quarter of the doctors that are accused of yelling at their patients on this forum actually do. just because someone is stern and telling you the truth doesn't mean they are yelling.

i've been afraid of what the doctor is going to tell me (especially about my heart), or what they were going to do to me (hey going to the gyno the first time is pretty scary!), but never scared of the doctor him/her-self.

You may be right that doctors aren't really yelling when people perceive it that way.

I get being afraid of what the doctor is going to do to you.  When I had to get cortizone shots in my knees, I was SCARED.  But not of the doctor.  Of that HUGE needle.

No, I am not afraid of any of my doctors.  I was, however, sometimes reluctant to go to one of my previous PCPs because he would give me a hard time about my weight but never had anything useful to try to help (just to eat 1200 calories a day and get some exercise).  Just one of the many reasons he has not been my PCP for a number of years.

I would not tolerate any doctor who scolded or belittled me.  It needs to be a collaborative relationship with mutual respect since the goal we BOTH have is for me to be as healthy as possible.  That was one of the most frustrating and hurtful things about having so much trouble getting a surgeon -- ANY surgeon -- to go in and find the source of my mystery abdominal pain last year... I felt like they either didn't believe the severity of my pain or were more concerned about other things than about helping me.

I wonder if that is part of the problem.  Maybe some people want doctors that fluff and feel that docs are being mean if they don't.

Many of us here have had to learn to be advocates for good healthcare. There are a lot of John/Jane Q Publics who believe everything a doctor says, and does not either feel the need to, nor feel comfortable to question their opinion. As a nurse, I see this way too often, and try my best to step in where appropriate. The running joke in our family, is whenever a hospitalization, or ER visit occurs, they should call one of us nurses to act as a medical interpreter. In many ways, it is pretty smart to have someone with you. I'm fortunate to be able to get honest opinions about a physician I need to see from doctors, and other nurses who work with them. No way I'd be able to stand some of the BS I hear about.

I am not afraid/intimidated by any of my doctors.  That is one of the primary requirements for me when choosing a doctor.  I have to feel comfortable with her/him in the doctor/patient relationship.

My father was a high-ranking military officer.  He was a very harsh man.  As a result, I tend to be naturally intimidated when dealing with authority figures.  When  dealing with our health care providers, that cannot be an issue.

I actually chose not to use a very high profile clinic, TV personality bariatric surgeon, because I had a very negative experience with one of the  surgeon's who performed a breast biopsy on me years earlier.  I was referred to him for the procedure  by my GYN (before he and his son opened the WLS clinic).  When I went to the clinic's WLS informational seminar, I had a huge block the entire time as he stood there presenting.  I knew immediately I would not use them no matter their reputation.

My bariatric surgeon was the perfect match for me.

NO

My endo is the nices guy.........even supportive when I do my ugly cry.  He is the one that suggested rny.  Yesterday, he was more than happy to order any lab that I wanted.  I have his cell number that I can call anytime.

My PCP is new.  Recommended by the bariatric center.  I saw him twice before surgery.  He came and saw me in the hospital after surgery for no reason just wanted to know how I was doing.  (not billed)  Last week, I ran into him in the hallway at the hospital.  He spent 1/2 hr. talking to him.  Supportive as all get go.

Although, I am known as the strange insulin girl by all of my doc including my surgeron.  I was on an insulin that is 5 times the strength of regular insulin and still could not controll my diabetes.

I do get tongue tied with my surgeon.  I am waiting for him to leave his wife and children and risk his medical career to date me.  He is totally HOT.
