I just had surgery on April 18/12 and I am having occasional pain in my shoulder and the nurse it is from the gas they use during the surgery.  When will this pass?

I was told by the surgical nurse that these pains can last up to 3 weeks.

If it is gas, you will get rid of it so much faster if you walk, walk, walk. I can't tell you how many times a day, everyday I got up and walked around my house for 15-20 minutes until it was no longer an issue. Before I was cleared to drive I had hubby and other family members take me anywhere they were going (grocery store, errands) and I would get out and walk for however long it took them to take care of whatever business they had.

I had my surgery on April 19th and the gas is in my chest and left shoulder.  While I was in the hospital they gave my heat pouches to put on it and they actually worked to move the gas around.  Now that I am home I am using a heating pad when im not up walking around.

Good luck to you.  I actually think this gas pain is worse than the surgery.

It does pass. I am 6 months outs and I get shoulder pain every so often after I eat. I have to remind myself to slow it down because some days I don't even feel I have had surgery. But the pain in my back and shoulders were horrible right after surgery.

Thank you to everyone to posted comments in regards to my shoulder pains.  I feel so much better knowing that there are people out there going threw the same thing.  I am also glad that I found this website.  Once again thank you.

Do you have your gallbladder? Shoulder pain was the number one harbinger of GB issues. Any shoulder pain you have now has nothing to do with the surgery.... it could be a sign of gallstones!

You want to walk walk walk.

The thing is that they put a gas into your abdominal cavity to provide the doc with a greater visual area. Some of the gas is trapped in your abdominal cavity and it takes a while for the gas to be absorbed by the tissue and the pain to ease off. My first Laproscopic surgery I was hurting for SIX weeks. for my RNY I did a LOT of walking as I heard that would help, and I only experienced one or two twinges. I don't know if that meant that walking was a super-cure, or if my surgeon was more conscientous about getting as much gas as possible out of my abdominal cavity and therefore I just had less pain because I had a better surgeon for RNY than for my emergency GB removal.

Though to be honest, I've had 3 other laproscopic procedures and done a lot of walking in each case, and had no pain for those.
