open vs. lap. RNY
RNY on 01/24/12
I had both ..well sort of, started lap. had to go to open. So I have both sets of scars, no big deal. My scar is 8 inches long from just above my belly button up. It took a bit longer to heal than I planned, from movement at bottom. Just how my big belly moved. So took a few weeks longer before I could go back in the pool.
My surgeon did say that being in there really let him make sure I had a great surgery, for what that's worth.

I opteD for lap.
I'm 24...no surgeries before..no children..and I have hopes of wearing a bikini one day...i was considered a lightweight going into surgery..my bmi was 38
my surgeon adv there was no reason to do my surgery open unless it was medically necessary.

I was scheduled for lap, but converted to open. All surgeons wil tell you that there is chance it may have to convert to open (or they should!) and you should be prepared for that possiblity- slim, but possible. My scar runs from bra line to about two inches above belly button.
I did develop a small seroma (fluid build up) at the top of my incision, and also a hernia, which was repaired laparoscopically two weeks ago.

Hello,
I am new here, but had to reply to you. I had my open RNY by Dr. Schlesinger on April 9th. The inision is healing well and I am looking forward to getting my drain tube removed at my first post op appointment next Wednesday. In short, I feel pretty good being two weeks post op. I did have a high BMI to start 46 but no major health problems. Glad I went with him and am looking forward to attending his first support group tomorrow. Good luck!
