Fran,
That is a VERY GOOD chiropractor , my dad would have been the same , most D.C.'s now a days don't even have x-ray machines and really don't know what they are working with , I am happy with the activator method , no twisting , turning. Your D.C. sounds awesome !!!!

Degenerative disc disease sucks!  I think it IS something terrible!  I had a laminectomy for a herniation at L4-L5 in 1999 and it re-herniated in 2010.  I have to be really careful all the time now.

When you're in an acute stage, oral steroids, like a Medrol dose pack, are a good option, although I don't know how pouches do with steroids.  Narcotics and muscle relaxants are also good short-term options.

I find that when my back is really bad, hamstring stretches help a lot.  Tightness in the hammies increases stress on my back and increases the pain caused by the disc.  I just wish I would remember to stretch them more often and not only when my back hurts.

Besides physical therapy and daily stretching and exercise, I don't know what else to suggest for long-tern help making your back feel better.  I wish you good luck and hope you feel better soon.

I've tried oral steroids and they didn't do much for me.  I do have vicodin and Flexeril.  I use the Flexeril when I have muscle spasms, which are only occasional, and use the Vicodin when the pain is especially bad.  I don't really want to be on Vicodin all the time though.  If I took it every time my back hurt I'd be taking it multiple times a day.

I had that and even worse... (herniated 2 discs) Yoga and decompression therapy ()Upside - down table - inversion tables) helped me a lot.  I also get regular acupuncture (it is expensive - but cheaper than no be able to walk and pain pills)

Have the SAME problems as you and have done the same things to try to figure out what's the matter. Doc said that MRI's don't always show the problem. Injections helped too. BTW, it's a HIPPA violation to look up a persons test results, even if you are fine with your mom doing so and will result in her dismissal from her job if she is caught without exception. Same with myself, if I were to look up MY OWN results, I'd get fired too. At our hospital, they monitor for such activity.

Thanks for pointing out the HIPPA issue.  Wouldn't that depend on what her position is at that office, though?  I mean, certain employees have access to patient records, that's part of their job.  I think patients call her for test results all the time.

I am fine with her having access to my records.  If I wasn't, I most likely would be seeing a different doctor, but if I wanted to see this doctor but wanted my info to be kept private from her, I would ask the office manager what she would do to ensure that.  I used to work for a social service agency, and there were a couple times we had a client that knew someone that worked in our office.  Once a client was a good friend of my administrative assistant, and I kept that client's file in my desk, not with our other client records, and filed all her paperwork myself, when normally that would have been the assistant's job.  I went to a lot of effort to protect the client's privacy and would certainly expect any office to do that for me if it was a concern, as well.

Kelly-  I've had degenerative disc disease as a result of 4 back surgeries. At the moment I'm feeling pretty good but a couple of years ago my neurologist had prescribed Zanaflex. It's a powerful muscle relaxer and it works pretty well.

Perhaps the "unpronounceable" stuff is really the thing that is the key issue? I have to say that there were a lot of big words on my MRI report though the summary was pretty cohesive. It talked about a lot of stenosis, narrowing, etc etc. What it boiled down to was DDD for all of my cervical spine but the top junction of vertebraes, and same thing 18 months ago for my lower back. In my case it was clear that I have the arthritis, the DDD, straightening of the spine where there is supposed to be a curvature, and two herniated disks (I have two in my low back also).

Has he discussed Radiofrequency Ablation? That is what they are thinking of doing for my cervical spine.

The pain of dealing with the DDD in my neck and back have worn me to a frazzle. I'm like you and don't want to do the Vicodin ( or any other narcotic as far as that goes) every day and the muscle relaxers are more or less a joke. Tried the  "tens unit" but relief was fleeting at best. My doctor says "we'll just try to keep you comfortable" after so many years of this or that treatment. The whole things just tends to wear on your soul after a while !! Hope your doctor can do something to give you relief.
