I had my RNY repair on Jan 21 and have lost 37 lbs. I had my blood work done about a week ago and saw my surgeon for a check up. He was very happy with everything and said my blood work was fine.
Later, when I was looking over my bloodwork results, I noticed there were two tests that came back high.
One was RDW (Red Cell Distribution Width) - mine was 15.3 and the good range is 11.0 - 15.0%. In Sept. 2011 it was 14.7.
The second was MPV (Mean Platelet Volume) - mine was 13.4 and the good range is 7.5-11.5% . In Sept. 2011 it was 11.
I did a little research online and I guess I'm kind of concerned. I think perhaps I should make an appointment with my physician. It does seem it's gone up since my surgery....
So, does anyone know anything about these tests? Should I be alarmed?

Unfortunately that is not so. We need to worry about these numbers specially if iron and ferreting were not tested. These may indicate low iron - and hopefully that can be corrected by supplementation. Many docs do not test iron and ferritin and once that drops - it is difficult to get that up. I know something about that. I did not had that tested until it dropped too low and i had to have iron infusions.

a high RDW is a sign of iron deficiency - what is your iron, ferritin, hemoglobin, hemacrit, RBC? You most likely need more iron and beter iron and take it with vitamin C. We need to take carbonyl iron and with vitamin C - for every 30mg of iron, we need 200mg of vitman C and not within 2-4 hours of your calcium or thyroid medicaiton. You can get great carbonyl iron at vitalady.com called tender irons and they have the vitamin C in them. They are 60mg each and depending on your ferritin and iron levels would determine how many you would need =I take 3 at bedtime and have great levels. they are easy on the stomach, nonconstipating and easily absorbed.
Your platelets are great - so I dont think you have to worry about the MPV being high, only wehn tthe platlelets are low. I have low platelets but my MPV"s are normal - really weird

Make sure they test your full iron panel and ferritin.
