let's play the protein shake game
So here's the protein shake game. Anyone that is having trouble finding a protein shake they like, post what you've tried and what you didn't like about it. List the brands, and how you prepared them. Did you dislike the taste, the texture, the smell, what?
Then tell us what flavors you like. Vanilla, chocolate, coffee, fruity flavors, peanut butter, what? Are you lactose intolerant?
Give us the info, and we'll help you design a shake you'll like. I'll help, and anyone else can jump in with suggestions, too. And I bet we can find at least one you'll like, but you have to be willing to experiment and try different things. And be willing to invest in some new protein shake powders, but you can get samples for just a couple dollars so you don't have to plan to spend a fortune on it.
Who wants to play? Give us the run down of your protein shake problems.

You can put the unflavored in just about anything. Well, anything kinda moist or creamy. Like applesauce, mashed potatoes, oatmeal, cream of wheat, soups, chili, scrambled eggs, yogurt, pudding, etc. Here's my favorite trick with unflavored protein. Put one scoop in a dish in the morning and keep it on your kitchen counter. All day long, put a little pinch of it in everything you can. If you only put a tiny bit in, it won't affect the taste or texture of the food, but by the end of the day you'll have gotten a whole scoop in - about 20 grams or so.

I've tried:
About Time - Birthday Cake
Mixed with skim milk and thought it was super nasty. Couldn't even taste any flavor (I don't like milk). Tossed it after two sips. My husband laughed at me for thinking it would taste good.
About Time - Mocha Mint
Mixed with water after deciding mixing with milk wasn't for me. It wasn't horrible. Tasted more minty than chocolatey. This one is a maybe for me which is weird because I don't really like chocolate much.
Syntrax - Cappuccino
The least offensive one I've tried so far. Mixed it with water. I hated it at first but I chilled it and added a splash of milk and half of a sweet n low packet. This is one I will probably buy a big thing of.
Syntrax - Chocolate Truffle
Unsure. One of the better ones and again I'm surprised because I'm not a huge chocolate fan. You suggested making a paste and adding it to warm liquid next time so I will probably order another sample and try that before buying a big thing of it.
Syntrax - Roadside Lemonade, Fuzzy Navel, Cherry, Apple, Tropical or Caribbean whatever
Mixed all with water. Hated all of them. Probably the texture and aftertaste is what put me off the most. I have a few more samples so I won't give up on them completely but I'm really thinking they are not going to be winners for me.
I ordered an Unjury sample pack but it hasn't arrived yet. After I get through that one I was thinking about trying the Syntrax Matrix ones.
Because if you make a protein shake with skim milk and put it in the blender with some ice, and blend it up real good, it's very similar to a milk shake.
If it's the taste of milk you don't care for, you might want to try soy milk. Which is pretty much the consistency of skim milk, maybe just a bit thinner, but a different taste. I don't really like the taste by itself, but when I use it in a protein shake it just tastes like whatever I've put in it.
If the Mocha Mint didn't have enough chocolate flavor for you, you could add a little sugar free chocolate syrup. But if you're not big on chocolate, you might not want to do that.
Syntrax cappuccino is my favorite, currently. I add a little bit of instant decaf coffee to mine and a little splenda. I also like it really cold - I make mine with chilled milk but add ice to it, too.
I'm not a big fan of the lemonade and other fruity Syntrax either. However, you can try mixing them with crystal light instead of plain water, which might help some. I don't think it gets rid of the aftertaste so much, though.

What brand of decaf instant coffee do you use?
Other than protein shakes, what do you like to drink? Are you a juice drinker, coffee drinker, tea, what?

Currently I am drinking vanilla, a scoop of sf hot chocolate mix, and a little vanilla pudding mixed with skim milk and lots of ice. It turns out like a frappacino. I am getting a little bored with that and would like other suggestions.
I can't stand the fruity flavors. The pina colado I mix with almond milk and it is pretty good. I do the click shakes with half milk and half water. For some reason mixing them with all milk makes my heart race.
