poll - what did your surgeon tell you about dumping?

I was given the 30% figure but did not know dumping can come from too much fat.  Learned that and more about RH here.

Nothing was stated by my surgeon or the nut about dumping or RH, or at least I have no recollection of it.

I do remember a support group meeting where it was discussed, as well as foaming.  However, it was discussed as if it was completely avoidable and not something to worry about.

I was told about 30% of patients have dumping syndrome. I do get dumping syndrome, but I can eat a reasonable amount of sugar (one or two small cookies are OK, three are not, soft serve ice cream sets me off). It does vary from time to time- one time, things are OK, another, dumping.

i don't remeber if they gave an actual percentage or not, but they did say the minority dump.

Mine said not all dump, but either way, be on the safe side and never have more than 5g of sugar. That's what I stick to now.

That not everyone dumps, but no indication of how low the number was... {sigh...}  I really ID want to (and expect to) be a dumper.  One of the VERY few failings of my pre-op education.

My doctor implied that dumping came hand in hand with RNY and that some people dumped on sugar and some on fats

I was told everyone has a tolerance limit. Some just happen to be significantly higher than others. And that all patients will push to find that limit not once, but at least twice. Some with really low tolerance, the 30% will find out quickly.

I agree with him. I have a pretty high sugar tolerance, but I can push that limit and it's not pretty.

The NUT used the 50% stat when she told me.  However, my friend had her surgery 2 1/2 years ago and she gave me the "real" story - which was real for her.  She dumps on fat and sugar except for dark chocolate!  Can you imagine?  I pray this is NOT a food that I can tolerate after surgery!
