Surgery tomorrow. MAJOR cold feet.
I was also warned about smoking however I quit about 2 years ago and it was the best thing I ever did. I keep telling myself that if could overcome that addiction (and believe me I had tried quitting dozens of times over 3 or 4 years) that I can overcome my food addictions also. It's something you need to be ready for; if you're not ready to do it, it won't work. I was tired of hiding from family, wasting my money and making my health issues worse. No patch, No pills, just tossed the pack one day and that was it. I was just ready... it was just my time.
My surgeon told me that smoking can greatly effect your pulmonary function during and after surgery and the anesthesia we're under will already be doing that (hence the breathing exercised they make us do after surgery) and smoking will just make it more dangerous. Plus, like someone else said, smoking after surgery can cause great damage to your pouch (ulcers and such).
We have to remember that our surgeons give us instructions and guidelines for a reason and we must follow them as closely as possible. I realize we're all human but the only person we'll be hurting in the end is ourselves.
I feel your nerves though, my date is next Weds. Best of luck to you !!!
