Is 1200 calories too much?

Most days I am under 1000 calories but some days I end up closer to 1100-1200 calories. Could this be too much? I have just barely started adding some cardio time on my elliptical (Other than the normal 2 mile walks I always do on my breaks at work. I am 4 months out this week.

Also, I would like to thank everyone on here for their support and help all the time. It means a lot to me, and would be lost without this constant support network.

There is no way to know if 1200 calories is too much without trying it out for a few weeks and see how it affects your weight loss.  If you don't lose, or lose too slowly, then you know that it's more then you need right  now.
I have found that I can't go by charts or other things that say I should lose weight eating 1200 calories or I have burned 300 calories after I exercise.  Those things are too general and don't take into account our altered bodies and personal metabolism.  The only thing I can go by is what works for me.

That is a good idea. I will see how 1100-1200 goes for a few weeks. Who knows maybe it will cause me more weighloss, or it could stall me. I am going to find out. Thanks!

Also, all 1200 calories are not created equally. It seems like 1200 calories
of carbs would be the same as 1200 calories of protein, but my body
says otherwise. It may not work the same for you, but the more protein
and the less white carbs I eat, the better I feel and the more I lose.
Good luck!

It might be a bit high but it is hard to tell. What are you eating?  How often are you eating?  How much protein are you eating?  You have lost about 50 pounds in 4 months which is good.  Some lose more and some lose less, all depends on how much you have to lose and again on how much protein you eat, how many carbs you eat.  When I was in the losing stage, I never really counted calories, so I have no idea how much I consumed but I counted my protein and I kept my carbs low but don't know exactly how much.  Once I got my protein in, then I would add fruits and vegetables and 1 starch per day.  This worked well for me and that is what my NUT at my Endocrinologists office had recommended for me - she has alot of gastric bypass patients.

By 4months - you should be getting atleast 90 grams of protein.

I agree with LadyTazz.  If you are adding additional cardio and the extra 100 or so extra calories and continue losing, then that must be a good mix for your body.  I've had to learn what works for me, my genetics, my age as a post menopausal female, etc,....When I routinely stayed below 1000, I hd consistent weight loss.  You sound like you are active too.

I'll echo what someone else said...all 1200 calories are not creatd equal.  I'm 7 months out and eat about 1200 calories most days...1300 when I have heavy duty workouts and I'm still loosing at a steady rate.   I've noticed that when I have more carbs in that 1200 calories, the weightloss slows down.  When its more protein, its zooming along.  Our bodies NEED carbs so it's tricky finding that "sweet spot" where you have the quick ready to use energy that carbs provide w/o having too much that slows down the weightloss.

I personally don't think 1100-1200 calories is too much but you have to see what your body says.  I think at 4 mouths out I was right around 1000 most days and on heavy workout days closer to 1100-1200 becuse of pre and post workout snacks.  Track your food, track your loss for a few weeks and see where things pan out.  At some point we ALL have to increase our calories or run the risk of premanetly lowering our metabolisms so do fear adding in some calories espically if your body is send you signals that it needs them.  I started dragging, was exhausted, was in a huge stall, and literally had people asking me if I was sleeping enough because I just LOOKED beat.  It took my trainer threating to cut back my workouts for me to increase my calories and my body thanked me immediately when I did.

Good luck with whatever you decide to do.

Not for me.  Actually 1200 is around half my daily calories.

I agree with what everyone else has said. However I wanted to add that at 3 months out, my doc/nut want me around 1000-1100 a day. I don't get that much but it's what they say to work up towards. I see you had surgery before i did so I don't see it as an issue, especially if those 1200 calories are the healthier choices ones.
