Sounds creepy to me.

There are alot of scams going around. I had a company calling saying they worked collections for T-mobile, claiming I owe money from 2007 lol funny thing I was a current t-mobile customer up until last March so that right there made no sense. He then wanted me to purchase pre-paid walmart card to pay him by phone because I told him I refused to give my account information over the phone especially knowing I don't owe t-mobile a dime.

Then there are the people calling randomly claiming I won a $500 grocery card, and all I have to do is pay shipping LOL  When I looked up one of the numbers up online it belonged to a movie theater in New York.

Just be careful, you never know who is the real deal these days.

Sounds creepy to  me.  Was he wearing an ID around his neck or did he show you a card from the company or anything like that?  If not, I'd call the cops and report it and ask them to drive around the neighborhood for a bit. I'm a big chicken like that though...

Deregulation of energy. These are sales people. Yes, they are creepy and they are sort of like Amway people. I had to down right threaten the guy who came to my door to get him away. Ugh!

Bells and whistles going off loud and clear!!!  To be honest, when I am home by myself I never, ever answer the door - I don't care who it is.  They are coming on my private property and I do not have to go to the door.  Call me paranoid, but I don't trust ANYONE!!  These days, even women are working with men to rob and kidnap.

I would definitely contact the utility company.

It probably is deregulation, like Nik says.  Has it just happened there?  The first year or so was hell with the companies trying to get you to sign with them.  And they do misrepresent a lot.  I had to deal with them at work as well.  Total pain in the ass.  Hung up on a few I am ashamed to say.

But you are right to scold yourself about telling him what time your partner would be home.  You should never tell someone you are alone to begin with.  Don't let it happen again, young lady!

No, people have come around about that before.  They always made it clear what they were here for.  They never claimed to be with my gas company.  They never asked me for a bill, either.  And they always had a flier or brochure they would leave with me.  This guy did not leave anything.

Our gas company employees always wear uniforms and display their company ID clearly when they come to the house. I agree with the previous posters who suggest calling the police. Maybe they've had other reports of suspicioius people going door to door.

I would also leave a note for my parter somewhere he will find it just in case stating what happened and what the guy looked like. Be safe!!

Agressive salesmen not being honest are one thing. But this sounds like it could be much more scary and creepy. I agree with other posters who said call the gas company (in the morning), call your neighbors to see if the guy went anywhere else in the neighborhood, and call the police to make a report. Keep your doors and windows locked and I would stay up til my partner made it home if I was you! And yes young lady- never ever ever tell someone you are home alone til midnight, or any other time. This is a crazy world we live in now and yes, it might be considered paranoid, but better paranoid than what could happen!
Stay safe!!!

I really don't know why I even said what time my partner would be home.  I didn't have a clue that anything was wrong at that point and I figured they guy would just say OK and leave.  Obviously I wasn't thinking.  I live in a pretty safe area and I guess I've gotten kind of lax about that sort of thing.  I used to live in the inner city and I wouldn't have even opened the door to a "gas man" before verifying his identity.  Around here, when the weather is nice, I leave the front door propped open so the cats can run in and out.
