WAY OT: Life happens, anxiety meds??

Wedding jitters and family medical problems...oy!

So, its 2 weeks till my wedding (March 31st) and we're putting together the last bits.  I'm getting frustrated as it was going to be a small wedding to begin with (about 40 plus any children that people bring) Now we're finding out that over half of the people we invited aren't going to be able to make it.  Also, I know it's horrible of me but we did our registry because there are things we NEED and I was wondering when you usually start seeing things being purchased off registries?? I'm not marrying for gifts dont get me wrong - we were just hoping for a little somethin ya know?  Anywhoo, gifts or no gifts we hope it turns out to be a fun wedding for those that do show up.  Just seems that everything is going poopy now that we're on the home streach!!

Family medical problems...this goes along with things going poopy. We found out this morning that my dad has stage 4 clear cell carcinoma from the adrenal glands. It's spreading to his lungs now. (originated in his kidney which was removed)  It's to the point that the oncologist told dad the chemotherapy would be doing more harm than good and he needs to look at quality of life at this point.  -_-

At my witts end here...dads been given a death sentence my "the big C" ...my wedding is supposed to be happening, I'm also only 4 months into a bachelors degree trying to keep up my A average...  I've SO got to get in to see my doc about something for anxiety... are there things RNYers can take for anxiety or are they a no no??

The only restrictions we have on meds are no NSAIDs and no extended/controlled release meds.  The typical anxiolytics are neither, so are fine to take.

I hope things calm down for you soon!

Me too! I've had psychotic breakdowns as a teenager and not since then but with everything going on I want to take a proactive approach..i know there is no pill out there to ease the pain of losing a loved one (or the possibility of losing them) but I'd really like to prevent total meltdown lol.. my doc is pretty cool about things like this and is my dads doc too so he KNOWS things are going on that are stressful!

I'm sorry things aren't going well.  I'm really sorry to hear about your dad.  That just sucks.  I'm glad you are proactive about some anti anxiety meds.  I take Cymbalta and Abilify for GAD/depression.  No problems with the new pouch and I feel great.  Good luck!

I take Xanax when I'm super stressed out. It helps me sleep. I have a prescription for the lowest dose and only take half a pill. I don't take them very often (one bottle has lasted me well over a year) but it helps relieve some of my anxiety knowing I have it on hand. Talk to your doctor and see what he/she recommends.

Hang in there!!

Of course there are things RNY folks can take for anxiety.

I'm sorry to hear about your dad.  As far as the wedding, I don't know what's typical but when I got married, most people did not buy gifts off the registry, they just bought other things.

My psych gave me Ativan for occasional anxiety attacks.  It's PRN, not an every day med.

I'm so sorry to hear about your dad.

I don't know how you feel about daily meds... I hated side-effects of those and much prefer to keep a fast-acting anti-anxiety (diazapam) on hand only for certain situations that set excess anxiety off.  Learning deep breathing and relaxation techniques to clear my mind has helped me more than any daily medication ever did.

As far as gifts go... Never, ever have I given a gift from a registry; not even exactly sure how that works.  However, I do my best give a well-thought-out and usable unique gift.  No doubt many of your loved ones do what I do, so don't give up on the gifts just yet!

Then, your dad.  That's news alone is enough to bring out the worst of anxiety.  Regardless of who does or doesn't show up out of your original guest list, treasure having your dad there.  No doubt he will be proud watching you as you exchange wedding vows and begin the next phase of your life.
