Ulcer, hospitalization, and weight gain

It really does sound scary, I know. Honestly, I waited so long, put everything off until I ended up in the ER. Do not do that! Find an experienced doctor who knows what to look for. Unfortunately, a scope doesn't always see what needs to be seen. I was in horrible pain that nothing was touching, and needed so much blood that my surgeon knew there had to be bleeding in my remnant. I wish I would have taken earlier steps to figure it out instead of just accepting what any doctor said. I have been back to him many times since ( he has done several dialations of my esoph. since then) and he is very pro-active about my recovery. As stated earlier, it could be several other things also. I never had any problems until about 7 years ago. Staring with small ulcers, then hernias, then obstructions eventually leading to sepsis. I have both lost and gained with my issues. Sometimes I felt like eating anything would ease the gnawing, other times couldn't keep down water. I was back in the hospital in November for malnutrition and dehydration. I had developed another ulcer at my duodenom (in less than a month) and couldn't keep anything down again. My surgeon admitted me again and I was put on an intense IV therapy trying to reduce the new one. I feel so much better now though! My surgeon and I work very close together, and at the first hint of anything I call him!

It's gastrectomy. Sorry- should have used spell check! It's removing all or part of the stomach. Been around for a very long time! Not as bad as it sounds.

I am sorry you are going through this,  Ulcers are tough thing to go through and I am sure you have taken the typical precautions of avoiding all NSAIDS, alcohol, smoking, aspirin, Pepto Bismol, arthritis meds of any types including IV;s.

I have many ulcers preop and amazingly havent had any postop but I have been on Protonix 2 times per day since the day of my surgery.  I have to ask, have you ever been tested for HPylori and had a blood test for a gastrin level?  A gastrin level when high can be a sign of a condition called zollingers ellison syndrome which causes severely high levels of acid and causes uncontrollable ulcers and heartburn and requires super high dosing of PPI's sometimes up to 4 or 6 per day, if that works.  It is sometimes due to a tumor of either the small intestines, the pancreas - they are very tiny and difficult to find.  You should do a search for Zollingers Ellisons Syndrome - it usually requires if the gastrin level is high to have an Octreotide Scan and then possibly a secretin stimulation test.  Not many doctors are familiar with it but you would need to go to a gastro at a teaching hospital for this - it is defininitey a possibilty for you andshould be considered because they could remove your stomach but if the there is a tiny gastrin secreting tumor in the pancreas or small intestines the ulcers will keep forming and as you see, the ulcers aren't simple ulcers
