So this morning I weighed in at 152.8! That's 10 freaking pounds up from January!! I just wonder if taking prozac has anything to do with the weight gain. I started taking them mid January for anxiety and It's like I feel sedated and spacy on them, Iv'e never had a high metabolism but I feel more pokey and tired. I quit taking them today, I hope that helps with the weight issue, I'm gonna see what else my doctir can suggest. Any suggestions? I am 3.5 years out from RNY.

Don't just quit taking your antidepressants!  Didn't your doctor explain that it was dangerous to do that?  You need to keep taking them as prescribed and go see your doctor.  With many antidepressants, they need to be discontinued gradually.

I don't know if prozac would be causing your weight gain or not.  Some antidepressants do that, or can do that, anyway.  Talk to your doctor.  But don't just quit taking your medication.

Please note: I AM NOT A DOCTOR.  If you want medical advice, talk to your doctor.  Whatever I post, there is probably some surgeon or other health care provider somewhere that disagrees with me.  If you want to know what your surgeon thinks, then ask him or her.    Check out my blog.

Years ago, I took Prozac and I gained 40 lbs. I quit taking them because of the weight gain and it caused me to have a hoarse voice. Kelly is correct. Please taper off of Prozac. A cold turkey quitting is dangerous!! Call your doctor and tell him that you wish to stop taking them. He can instruct you on the proper decrease. The med also stays in your body for quite awhile. (3-4 weeks) It has a long half life. Good luck. Rose

Agree - don't stop taking the meds - they have to be slowly taken out of your system.  As far as weight gain with Prozac, I beleive that was one of the anti-depressants that actually helped take reduce weight.  Anti-depressants should not make your feel 'spacy or sedated'.  So maybe it is not the right one for you or the dose is too high ...but you still have to gradually stop them.  Call you doc right away.

Prozac can help some with weightloss and other can gain weight on it.  If it is not helping, I would get into you doc asap.  There are many options in med for anxiety these days.  And like Kelly said, do not stop med without talking with your doc.
