Let he who is without blemish cast the first stone
I read the “I can eat anything thread."
Please raise your hand if you had your shizz together right away after surgery?
“But Nik, I didn’t eat 1600 calories!!!"
Is that because you didn’t want to or because you COULDN’T? For some of you the former is true. For me, I can say it was the latter. If I found I COULD eat a bunch of food right after surgery (and I wasn’t nauseous or uncomfortable), I probably would. I thank the good Lord every day I did have severe restriction. Cuz my brain just doesn’t process shouldn’t (as in “you shouldn’t eat that or you shouldn’t eat that much…"), even four years post-op. I understand CAN’T.
So before we accuse someone of not being committed to their process, think about this. I’m willing to bet my measly paycheck that we ALL lean on the effects of our surgery, in some way, shape or form, to force behavior modification. But if you found that your surgery didn’t strongarm you into better behavior BEFORE you’d had a chance to work on the head demons, could you honestly say you are immune to doing something monumentally counterproductive?
If you are immune...good for you. For the rest of us...sometimes we just need to be pointed in the right direction. But I didn't like some of the posts I saw (not all) that quickly turned into a band wagon of self-righteousness.
Everyone is entitled to their opinion. But that surprised me a lot.

For real though. Some folks gave good advice. Others...were WHACK!

I'm not perfect. I certainly wasn't right after surgery. And I am a food addict. So if I could cheat after surgery I probably would have. Thankfully I got the whole nine: dumping, severe restriction, nausea, pain, etc.
I am thankful for that because it forced me to have to think about food in a new way.
While everyone isn't like me, I know we all depend on this surgery in some way to help us change ourselves. Otherwise, what's the point. But MY point is that it takes time. It's a process. If a person is in a stage of their process where we can't reasonably expect them to make great decisions on their own laurels, I don't see how it is helpful of us to accuse them of not being ready for the changes of this lifestyle.
I can be ready to change without having changed yet. And conversely if I find the tools I thought I had for change did not work...I am not immune to relapse. It's a reality.

This is a public forum with many varied personalities - some people have a warm and fuzzy hand holding style, others have a more tell it like it is style. I dont think one way is right and one is wrong but I do think it is wrong to pat her hand and tell her that her choices were right or that she would be ok if she carried on as she was.
If you put yourself out there on a public forum on the internet you have to be prepared to hear ALL the opinions - unless you want to put some sort of caveat at the end "only people that agree with me need reply" or some such!
