preventing deficiency vs. treating deficiency

That's a good point.  I guess who you follow is a decision you have to make for yourself.  I personally follow the ASMBS guidelines and then adjust from there based on my labs.  Their guidelines are based on science so it makes sense to me to use them as a starting point.  Now, if my surgeon had been able to show me some studies or something scientific to back up his recommendations, I would have evaluated that information against the ASMBS guidelines and then determined which seemed right to me, but he had nothing to back up his recommendations for taking calcium carbonate instead of citrate or not taking any iron.

Well, see...In my MIND I was always a prevent but in practice I was a treater.

Until I got scared straight.

That dip in my b12 levels (from not supplementing for months) scared the crap out of me. I realized a few things as a result.

First, I need tools to help me remember. I use www.mymedschedule.com to send me texts about my vitamins now.

Second, I realized that I can and will do irreparable damage if I don't knock it off.

Lastly, and this may seem over simplified, but when the restriction, getting stuff stuck, etc. part is over for post-ops it can become easy to forget our bodies are STILL different than non-op bodies. Just staying cognizant of that fact helps encourage me to take my vitamins.

I also bit the bullet and got chewables which I'm much more compliant with than swallow pills. Your mileage may vary.

I didn't know about the my med schedule web site so I'm glad you mentioned it! I signed up for text messages since it's really hard to remember when to take what. I made an Excel spreadsheet with checkmarks but the texting is even better!

I set alarms on my phone and my computer to remind me when to take pills.  Just another idea.

I am definately of the prevent.  I started on this journey rough and had IV vitamins for almost the first year; therefore, I was all over watching labs teh second year for problems and concerns.  I don't remember who posted it, but there was a bloodwork sheet that listed everything in excel.  I track my bloodwork there (end up doing it every 4 months b/c of iron and thyroid) so that I can look for trends.  Personally I don't care if I am still in the "good" range if the trend is headed down and I have not been able to correct it on my own.

My iron is no where close to really low or scarey low, but it has been on a trend since about a year headed down ever so slightly each time.  I have changed irons, double and tripled the amount, etc.under the care of my PCP to see the same decrease; therefore, I went to the Hemotologist who is starting iron transfusions next week!

I guess the OCD that gets me in trouble is good for somethings!

I will say I am always disappointed when I have to take less of my favorite vitamins (For example, I love my sublingual B12s that are peppermint - I even looked forward to them after lunch, but my B12 is like double the recommended so now I only take it every other day to see if we can get it down.)  I am of the school something are worth the extra money as I HATE taking pills, but the chewables are okay.

I may have had a few extra potholes along the way, but the journey has been good!

I'm a preventor. Vitamins is one of the things I'm religious about taking and preventing. I did this for my health and I'm too old to be getting any other problems. Luckily, I have a great doc *****views all my labs with me and is quite supportive of whatever changes I feel I need and will take my labs regularly and more often when we both feel the need.

My plan is to prevent. Surgeon started me off on a plan pretty similar to ASMBS and the only variance was when deficiencies & surpluses (copper & zinc) appeared, and then I had to change up some stuff. Now what I'm doing is keeping me good on everything and so long as that keeps going, I'll stick to what I'm taking.
