What are your best tips for maintenance?

For those of you that have been maintaining for a while, what are your best tips for maintaining?  How do you do it?

For me, I think the two things that help the most are measuring my portions and staying away from starchy carbs.

Now, I don't always get out my measuring cups but I do often.  Other times I just eyeball it as best I can but I'm not always real good at that.  And I do eat starchy stuff like bread sometimes, just not very often.  I've found it makes me hungrier and I can eat too much of it, so I do better if I just stay away.

I honestly believe being a Vegetarian helped me in losing my weight as well as maintaining it. I am a “healthy" Vegetarian. I eat a wide variety of beans, nuts, seeds, eggs, low fat cheeses, yogurt and milk. I also eat a lot of fresh fruits and vegetables as well as whole grain breads, crackers, cereal and pasta. I am able to eat 1800 calories a day with limited exercise (due to Rheumatoid Arthritis). I count my calories and protein grams daily as well as take all my supplements and drink over 64 ounces of fluids daily. I have never swayed from the rules or eaten foods that are not nutritious. Some may say I am too strict but I am happy being so vigilant.

I run.  I couldn't get the last of the weight off and do any maint. until I did that.  I'm not saying everyone should go out and lace up their running shoes (although it is an awesome workout) but finding an excercise I love has helped so much.

Everyone has to find what works best for them but here are mine:

- never forget where you came from (mentally and physically)

- exercise. Weights and running

- fruits and veggies

ETA: what my signature says: own it. Maintenance becomes the super tough emotional and mental part.

Be happy.

Just as Kitten said, you have to make adjustments based on your own habits/weaknesses.

For me I do the following:

1) Measure/weigh my food probably 60-70% of the time
2) Track.  I havent' always been the best at this, and during my 2nd year I put on about 7-8 lbs.  I've now lost that by tracking the last 2 months.
3) Exercise.  Aside from building muscle and endurance - it makes me FEEL better.  Better mood, better sleep, and less likely to eat crap.

I am a little over 2 years out and I try to always:

Eat every 3-4 hours no matter what
Drink at least 80 oz no sugar liquids
Exercise 3-5 days a week doing things I enjoy like swimming and a walking circuit
Weigh daily (works for me)

I am not a measurer or tracker, I have become very acustom to listening to my body:)

Almost 5 years out and no regain.

The most important thing for me is if I always eat dense protein first I get so full that I don't have room for bad things and I stay full longer.

Kelly thanks for such a great topic. I'm just about at my first year anniversary and figure I'm about at maintenance now. I'm still trying to find what exercise I like best. I loved running but then blew out my knee. I'm currently recovering from rotator cuff surgery so as soon as I can I'll go back to the gym. These are all great tips for maintaining!!

Thank you so much bringing up this question-- IT is good to know what successful people, first those that have reached their goals, and then still maintain their goals, I have seen so many negative comments, it is nice to see positive comments, that can help you' I am thinking about going vegetarian, no meat, right now I eat chicken. fish and turkey, but I want to try no meat, I just need to know about how you get the protein in without meat..

Lots of things have protein besides meat.  Milk ,yogurt, cheese, cottage cheese, beans, nuts, tofu, veggie burgers...
