Now I'm kind of insulted

Today I took the five pound block of cheese I got from the food pantry the other day out of my fridge to cut it into smaller pieces so I could freeze some of it because it would take me forever to eat five pounds of cheese.  When I was opening the box, I saw the expiration date printed on it.  September 2011.

Now look.  I realize beggers can't be choosers and I'm grateful for being given food.  And when we get food from the food pantry, I work really hard to find meals I can make out of it even if it's not the type of food I would buy for myself and even if it's stuff I don't really like that much.  It's free and it's a gift and I mostly eat it.

And sometimes I eat food that's a little past the expiration date because sometimes it's still good.  But six months?  Come on.  Who gives old cheese to the food pantry?  And why is the food pantry giving out expired food?

That seems insulting to me.  It's like saying, "Well, we couldn't sell this old cheese to anyone but since you're poor and can't buy your own cheese, you can eat it anyway.  You don't deserve good cheese, or healthy food, or food that isn't way past its expiration date."  Maybe I'm overreacting... but I'm insulted.

Hopefully it was an oversight and not an intentional slight by the people who donated the cheese to the food pantry.

Is it an actual expiration date or a "best if used by" date? Cheese is already old.. that's why its cheese. lol

(I do understand what you are saying and where you are coming from. I get why you feel insulted. Hopefully it was just an oversight and NOT just the way things are done.)

I don't really know.  It doesn't specify, it just has a date printed on the package.  And yeah, cheese is old... but they put dates on it for a reason, don't they?

Well, "best by" dates are tricky. Some companies use them as a suggestion of when the product tastes the best. Kind of like how when cereal goes stale, there's not actually anything wrong with it that would hurt you but it doesn't taste as good as it did when it was fresh. Expiration dates indicate when a food may no longer be safe to eat rather than just not tasting as good. I would think that cheese would be more likely to have a best by date rather than an expiration date.

I'm a "cut the mold off the cheese and eat it" kind of girl myself. But my boyfriend won't eat anything past the date on it.. he doesn't care what kind of date it is. He will even throw out stuff that isn't past its date if it has been open for more than a week or two. He threw out some pickles that had been in the fridge for 2 months (in a jar, with the lid on).. I was like "Baby, they're PICKLES for goodness sakes! The whole reason you pickle stuff is to keep it from spoiling!" lol

So I understand your desire to chunk the cheese regardless of whether its still technically safe to eat.

I more than likely would not want to eat it anyway. My dad used to cut the mold off cheese and eat it. He had 12 siblings and was dirt poor growing up so I guess his standards were a little lower, but I just would rather not eat it. He grossed me out with what he'd eat.

I remember my grandmother doing that.  She was very frugal.  She also grew up extremely poor, in the hills of Kentucky, had to walk to school barefoot in the snow, that kind of thing.

I don't see any mold on this cheese.  But I still don't plan to eat it.

Phelps.  Which is a little tiny town.  I dunno what county it's in.  It's not real far from the West Virginia border.  It's a coal mining town, that's pretty much all that's there.
