"you've really kept the weight off"

The surgery is a tool that takes off approximately 100 pounds.  Any other weight that is lost is because of the person's personal use of their tool.  Keeping that weight off after the honeymoon period of approximately two years is also because the person is using their tool properly.

A hammer, saw, or screwdriver won't work unless someone uses it properly.

People who do not use their tool properly do not lose as much of their excess weight and do not maintain their weight loss as well.  What you MIL said was a complement and also showed her repressed wish to see you regain.  When I had my bounce-back regain at about 30 months, many of my family and friends were delighted.  Happiness showed on their faces when they looked at the new roll of fat around my waist.

Nobody said anything, but I could tell that they were relieved that I was once again going to go back to my old status as the fattest one in the room.  Well it took time and effort and I lost that regain.  No one ever comments on that.

I look at the comment as a compliment to your resolve & commitment.

Maybe she was trying to compliment you....for some people, that is very awkward.

Take that as a compliment.

I have found that people EXPECT you to gain it back and when they see that you are walking the path and working hard to maintain they seem surprised.  I was recently presenting with my surgeon and he made a statement that kind of made me pause..."It was his job to give us a tool to get over the hump and lose weight, but we must be committed inorder to maintain."  I know he has said it before and when I give my testimonial I alway talk about this being a lifestyle, but I diet everyday and to not think you will never think about food and your weight again, but also I have been given a high dollar tool and it is my job to read the users manual and use it to the best of my ability!

People continue to be surprise when they see me as I guess they think I would have gained it back.  I guess we have to remember that it is the ones who fail that people remember.  It was probably just on her mind and she happened to slip out, but chalk that up as a good one!

I may have had a few extra potholes along the way, but the journey has been good!

I think, for the most part, in my experience, with non-WLS people - people generally don't keep weight off - she was probably coming from somewhere like this.  I kind of have this attitude about myself - I'm keeping it off - so far.  It's kind of like holding my breath.  I've certainly never kept it off before.

You've done wonderfully - I'll bet the thought just occurred to her and the thought popped out as words - happens to me all of the time.  I think she is proud of you - and impressed by what you've managed to do.
