"you've really kept the weight off"
Tonight we had dinner with my partner's parents and after we'd finished dessert (I ate ONE bite of banana cream pie), we were just sitting around the table talking and out of no where his mom says, "You've really kept the weight off since you had that surgery."
I was kind of surprised because she rarely mentions my surgery and not sure what brought it up, but i just said, "Yes, I have." Then I added, "So far." She didn't say anything else about it, just started talking about something else altogether. But I spent the rest of the evening wondering what made her mention it and if she had expected me to gain all the weight back or something.

LOL i know what you mean i have lost around some 46-48lbs since my pre op in nov/29/2011 and some people that dont know i had the surgery are already telling me that i will probably gain it back...since im going the "wrong way about it" drinking protein and eating small mean according to them im starving my body and protein is going to make me gain muscle and the scale wont go down.. im just like," thanks a lot that is so sweet of you to say so,NOT" i guess they expect me to fail...such little faith they have in me.. but oh well im here to prove them wrong and since they are not really people i can trust i wont bother explaining to them that i had the RNY..but i get a wicked gleeful feeling just thinking about what they say behind my back because im loosing weight.. it makes my day..
Don't read anything negative into her comment. It doesn't help your relationship if you do. Take it as a compliment. You still look great and she noticed.

Definitely sounds like a compliment to me- at least that's how I would take it.
You deserve it! Kudos!

In my experience, a lot of people don't know much about gastric bypass and have negative impressions about it. Just about every single person I told about it in my life immediately said "I know someone who had that and regretted it" or "I know someone who had that surgery and gained all their weight back". I doubt that many people have failed after gastric bypass but all it takes is one random story somewhere and all of a sudden it's a trend in some people's minds. Maybe you can try to see what she said as a compliment while recognizing that people who haven't done the research expect it to fail like so many other weight loss methods.
