Do all RNY patients wake up with a drain tube??

I had open RNY not lap, but did not have a drain.  I did, however, have a gastric tube (goes into your old stomach) for about 3 weeks.  I have had drains for a number of other surgeries, though.  They are really jnot a big deal at all... Just a suction bulb attached to a tube that foes int your abdominal cavity.  You just have to empty the bulb into the toilet periodically.

My surgeon said the main reason surgeons use them is in case of a leak and since he has not had a leak in years, he does not use them anymore.

I had one, no big deal.  Didn't even notice it and they removed it the day I left the hospital.  I was drugged up so I didn't feel a thing when they took it out.  Don't sweat it!

I was told I'd have  JP drain and that they'd remove it before I left the hospital, but my surgeon ended up forgoing it (yay!).  He said not everyone needs one.  You might want to talk to your surgeon and ask if he can put one in only if he sees that it's totally necessary.

I had one and it is no problem at all.  Mine stayed in til about 10 days after surgery.  I had open and I went home with it.  I just emptied it each day and kept it pinned to my shirt on the inside.  It is small and doesn't hurt at all.

When my daughter was 8 she had a major surgery and woke up with two drains.  One was removed before we left the hospital and the other was left in for two weeks.  We did not have to do anything but check the site for infection signs.  When it was removed she said it didn't hurt at all!  I hope that makes you feel less anxious.   I worry about a nose tube for some reason!  Good luck with your upcoming surgery!
