Poll: Cramps and spasms

Last night I posted on Facebook about how my foot spasms are getting worse and a whole bunch of post-ops posted that they experienced the same or leg spasms/cramps. Do you?

There didn't seem to be any one thing folks were deficient in either. Most gave me the advice to incorporate more bananas (potassium) into my diet and one friend said mustard almost immediately helps because it has tumeric in it.

But do you experience foot/leg spasms or cramps post op? And did you pre-op?

I used to get leg/foot cramps all the time.  I started drinking diet tonic water with quinine before I go to bed and they have pretty much disappeared.

I heard that too. I don't like tonic water. I have to see what else has quinine.

ETA: Ha! I knew I'd heard of it somewhere before too. It's used to treat malaria (which is one of the areas my organization works in). Looks like tonic water is it. Might have to get me some.

That is interesting.  It is not one of my favorites but I have gotten used to it.

I went thru a couple months where I got them alot! annoying. I do seem to get them more often post op.

I learned the hard way that alcohol really sets them off.

I keep meaning to try tonic water, but I hate it too. My MIL swears by it! Ya know, come to think of it, she is a diabetic and suffers with cramping. Wonder if that has anything to do with it? not that Im diabetic, but with the dumping and rh?

I tried potassium supplements. They didnt help me.

I never get these, and I workout pretty intensely and stretch A LOT.

Also, I eat at least 1 banana everyday (long ride days 4+hrs I have 2).

Hope this stops for you- sounds awful!

I get leg spasms on hard workout days even after eating Bananas.  My calves will spasm so bad it looks like something is alive under the skin.  I might have a video I can put on youtube!

I rarely )if ever _ had the spasms preop RNY. Now I do.

That happens when I do not get enough of minerals - and salt. I need my salt.  (salt - sodium - keeps the water in...)

I also need my carbs. When doing low carbs - the body not only loses stored glycogen - but also water from muscles, liver.

I get 'em too, Nik.... and oddly, if it starts up in one foot or leg, within hours it'll be doing the same thing in the other foot or leg.  I get them in my toes, the top of the acrch of the foot, the ankle... seriously, I get them in spots where there's barely enough flesh to cramp!

I've tried upping various supplements and every other idea I've heard, but no luck... I'm going to try the diet tonic water.  ANYTHING to help with the cramps/spasms because they are seriously brutal.
