3 1/2 years out and Liver problems
I have just gone through all kind of liver evaluations because of elevated liver enzymes. I was told that elevated liver enzymes weren't that uncommon with WLS patients. I was able to go back and see my levels for the last 9 or so years since my first WLS and they have almost always been somewhat elevated. I was told this is pretty normal.
I recently went had problems with very elevated enzymes, my ALT got as high as 224 (normal range 13-48). I had an ultrasound and a liver biopsy. The ultrasound was normal, the biopsy showed some inflammation but nothing serious. Best we can figure at this point is that it was because I was taking too much Vitamin A. I stopped the Vitamin A and my enzymes went down immediately.
I heard that milk thistle is good for the liver, too. Watch your Tylenol intake, as well as other drugs and make sure you tell the doctor everything you are taking, including OTC things.

High liver enzymes can be a sign of gall bladder trouble (or remaining gall stones if your gall bladder is already out). About 3 months after my RNY I went to my PCP who said my enzymes were high and scheduled a CT scan. He was puzzled because I did not have a gall bladder and this is an indication of gall bladder issues. The day before the scan I experienced pain similar to when my gall bladder acted up and went to the hospital where I knew my RNY surgeon had privileges. It turned out I had gall stones stuck in my bile duct which caused pancratitis. My RNY surgeaon and a gastro surgeon cleaned me up and created a large bile duct to allow any future stones to pass through. I ended up in the hospital for about a week.
I have been struggling with elevated liver enzymes since August 2011.
I thought it might have been some sort of side effect fron RNY almost 2 years ago.
Well I just found out it is not. I did find out I have Autoimmune Hepatitis. Apparently my immune system is attacking my liver. I am scheduled for a liver biopsy next week to determine the damage and course of treatment.
I already have Rheumatoid Arthritis diagnosed 4 years ago and Hypothyroidism diagnosed 6 months ago which are also autoimmune disorders.
