Poll re: protein shakes
RNY Gastric Bypass 1-8-08 350/327/200 (HW/SW/CW). I spend most of my time playing with my food over at Bariatric Foodie - check me out!
not daily. a few a week sometimes
Is that what your surgeon and dietician recommended or did you decide to do something different?
My surgeon nor NUT has said to stop them at this point, but they don't require them as long as I get my protein.
Why do you use protein shakes, if you use them?
Usually I have a shake on my way to work out with the personal trainer at the gym. I don't want "solid food" but I need some calories/ nutrients to get through that hour. Sometimes I will have a shake if I am super stressed or depressed because otherwise I wouldn't eat at all.
Are you satisfied with the results of your WLS? Were you able to reach your goal and maintain your desired weight using protein shakes (or not using them, as the case may be)?
Well I am only just over 6months out but I am extremely satisfied at this point. I used shakes a lot up to just a few weeks ago and I can't tell a difference in rate of loss.
Have you had any problems from not getting enough protein, particularly if you don't use protein shakes?
No problem getting protein without shakes - and I aim for 80-100g per day

Yes...I drink one for breakfast on work days.

My nut said I could meal replace or use to get the protein gram count up.
Why do you use protein shakes, if you use them?
My Costco shake packs 30 grams of protein in only 160 calories. Find me another source of protein that packs that many grams in so few calories. Chicken or turkey maybe but I don't want that for breakfast. I sip it as I drive to work. Slider food or not it doesn't change the fact that I can't eat until recess time and then I only have five minutes to wolf something down.

It's too soon to tell. I lost 32lbs pre-op no shakes I have lost 28lbs post op. I was eating healthy on the pre-op diet but was consuming wayyy more food. Of course everyone loses more quickly in the beginning. I just had my beginning befor surgery I think.

Too soon to tell. I just had my labs run today. I'll know in 2 weeks at the dr's office.
So here is what I'm wondering.
Do you use protein shakes regularly? That doesn't have to mean every day, but fairly often.

At this point I drink a protein shake after dinner, with either 1 or 2 scoops of protein powder in it depending on how much protein I got during the day. I also add protein powder to Greek yogurt.

This is a timely question for me. According to my nut's recommendation I'm supposed to totally stop them this week (7 weeks post-op), and eat only three meals a day and no snacks. I'm supposed to be eating vegetables, fruits, and complex carbs, too. But since I can only eat about half a cup at each meal, I'd have to eat NOTHING but protein to get even 60g of protein in per day.
I think I'll probably continue what I'm doing, adjusting the amount of protein in the shake depending on what I ate. (If I have yogurt and protein powder for bfast I can get 24g of protein, but if I eat a cheese stick that's only 6.)
Why do you use protein shakes, if you use them?
To get the amount of protein I need per day.

So far so good. I'm down 29 pounds in 6.5 weeks.

As long as I use the protein shakes I can get plenty.

Here's my response to your poll -

I did drink one every night until winter and I stopped. I need to get back to it. The "milkshake" type that I made was my dessert that kept me from snacking at night. I eat protein bars at least 3 or 4 times a week - also dessert or snacks.
Is that what your surgeon and dietician recommended or did you decide to do something different?
I haven't gotten much info on eating after the first few months. They told me to get 60 grams of protein a day - I think it is up to me how to do that.
Why do you use protein shakes, if you use them?
I finally like one! It seems like a large milkshake the way I make it now. It fills me up for my ice cream fix. I eat protein bars because they taste good and help me not want candy/cookies/cake, etc.

Yes, I am satisfied - I could do better, it's not my WLS's fault, it's mine. I have not reached normal weight. For my height, I need to weigh 145 or less to be "normal" . I weigh 160-170 - 165 most days now. I need to raise my bar. Honestly, I never thought it possible that I could weigh 165. It's like exercise -- at first I was satisfied to walk 10 minutes - but now I've raised the bar. I need to do the same on my weight so I'll do something about it. Protein shakes could help.

In the beginning, I hated all protein shakes. I lost more than 1/2 of my hair. That was a problem.
I think protein supplements are pretty important for us unless we are very regimented in our eating. The other thing with me is balance of meat/vegetables or I'll get constipated. If I eat enough meat to get enough protein, I won't be eating anything else and then I'll get constipated. What a mess!
Yes Between 1 and 4 shakes per day
Is that what your surgeon and dietician recommended or did you decide to do something different?
Not to start with. It wasn't until I went from working out to truely training that my protein goals were raised. I train between 90 minutes and 3 hours a day depending on the day.
Why do you use protein shakes, if you use them?
With my protein goal being 140-200 grams per day I would struggle to get in close to the minimum without the use of supplements.

I'm satisified most days. There are days I would like to lose 10-20 more pounds and days I see that I am able to do things most healthy people can't and I am fine with where I am.
Have you had any problems from not getting enough protein, particularly if you don't use protein shakes? If I did not use supplements I would never get in all of my protein.
