marked fatty replacement of the pancreas

I recently had  a CT scan to check to see if my kidney stones have come back which of course they have but thankfully they aren't obstructing my ureters, so isnt' considered an emergency and they are too large to pass as usual.

I don't have a fatty liver but it says that I have marked fatty replacement of my pancreas.  I looked at my last CT from the fall and it said the same thing so it has been there for a few months.  I spoke to both my Gastro doctor and my Endocrinologist and neither of them are sure what to make of it.  When  I did a search online it kept bringing me to Cystic fibrosis which I obviously don't have - I even had a sweat test about 15 years ago when I was having terrible asthma, bronchits, pneumonia  and chronic sinus infections.   I was since diagnosed with an Immune System problem being the cause of the infections and I get treatment and infections are much better but now the pancreas problem on my CT makes no sense.  Just wondering if anyone else has this?  My Endo even asked if I know if anyone gets this after RNY since she knows we get a fatty liver after rapid weight loss but I said I never heard of it and I would do some research

any ideas?

Google "fat replacement of the pancreas" Several articles that could be interesting. If you have a functioning liver, and pancreas, it sounds like this could be akin to fatty liver. I'd never heard of this either. It's kinda scary to have something even experts don't have a handle on.

thank you but that is talking about pancreatitis and statins - I have never been diagnoses with pancreatitis, the CT didnt' say it was enlarged at all.  I am looking for information on fatty replacement of the pancreas - it is the pancreatic tissue has been replaced with fat

During my studies - sometimes you may have some form (not acute) form of pancreatitis. Almost like a chronic (low symptoms) form of on and off inflammation.  That may overtime cause scaring and that may be a reason (chronic low grade inflammation) for fatty replacement.
Damage organs sometimes does not regenerate fully...

When I was younger I had inflamed pancreas... lots of pain and food intolerance..  And was told that I needed to follow a very strict diet...and have more tests done.   Did not have insurance, and could not afford any tests.... but had to follow the diet (barely could eat anything)... Eventually things went back to normal... but later my doc told me that I had some scaring in that area... long time ago...

IS there a way to diagnose chronic pancreatitis?  From what I have read, after some time your pancreatic enzymes go back to normal and are no longer elevated so diagnosis is very difficult.  I have also had a problem in the past with pancreatic insufficiency with very low levels of pancreatic enzymes, so this might scew the results as well.
I do suffer from severe malabsorbtion much worse than I used to but I thought it was due to having a large portion of my right removed and the illiostomy and ultimate reversal somehow playing havoc on my system because this is when all the trouble started. I do have terrible abdominal pain and it does radiate to my back which is a sign of pancreatitis.  I also have trouble eating alot of things and have had constant diarhea since the reversal of my illiostomy - so I wonder if somehow somehow the surgery damaged my pancreas and no one ever picked up on it.

I had the CT which showed the fatty replacement - would an MRI show anymore information?  I see my Endocrinologist this week and would love to talk to her.  If I need to, I can see my gastro but lately I have been to complicated for him but if I have some good information, he will usually look into it for me.

From what you wrote - you do had and still having issues with pancreas.  The pain, the low enzymes, the digestive issues - all indicate some issues with it.  The only way to really diagnose that - that I heard off -i is to do biopsy while you are in pain - to see if they can detect any inflammation...  But that also can be tricky.  Pain - indicates there is something going on - and pain is usually a sign of inflammation.  Some cells die - and they are replaced with scar and fatty tissue.
Same like with liver.   Liver cells die - and they either form scars or fatty tissue.

They did not have to damage the pancreas per say due to surgery - the drugs they had to put you on, and other meds - may have done that... plus any other issues you were having.

There was a time that I had issues with pancreas- and I did supplement with enzymes - to allow the organ to rest.  I also followed a very strict diet... to relieve the liver and pancreas.  But at the same time I lost a lot of weight... something you can't afford.  (I know I could not right now either),

Like with any other part of the body - their may be some injury - or irritant (like a small stone? - "grain of sand", or some deposits...) that irritate the area on and off  (think about bone spurs - )

Not sure how hold you are, but eventually everyone's pancreas will be fatty replaced at some point. Are you diabetic? That could make a difference. Fatty replacement of the liver or pancreas is not something to worry about really; it's often seen in obese and/or diabetic and/or older people.

I don't have a fatty liver, I am not diabetic and I am no longer overweight. I didnt' have this when I was overweight or losing weight.  My pancreas was actually atrophied about 3 months prior to this finding so something odd is going on that no one can understand and I really don't think it has anything to do with aging.  I am 49.  Maybe if  I had a fatty liver but I don't - I tend to belive more what the other poster said about a chronic type of pancreatitis
