I forgot the rule about iron & calcium...

You cant take them together, right? And what are the different types of iron and what makes them different... which is best for us post-op? (Surgery 2/28 and I'm stocking all vites *or as many as I can* now).. Thanks Kelly for the basic list. It's been my savior!

Correct, iron and calcium need to be at least two hours apart.

There are a bunch of different types of iron, including carbonyl, ferrous sulfate, ferrous fumerate, etc.  The main difference is that the ferrous ones are not all elemental iron while the carbonyl one is.  The ferrous ones also contain iron salts, which tend to cause constipation.  So I like carbonyl.

There is also something called heme iron which is a whole differnt kind of iron, and it can be taken with calcium.  It's absorbed really well but is also very costly.  Most people do well enough with carbonyl.

Thank you! Where do you guys find that it's the least inexpensive to get all your vites? Walmart? Amazon? A specialty website? They are swimming around in my head. I'd just like to stick with one place, if at all possible... so I can just get them all at once on a monthly or bimonthly, or whatever the case may be, basis.

It depends on what vitamins you want.

You can get a good multi at Walmart, including a chewable multi if you want that.  You can get calcium citrate tablets at Walmart but if you want chewables you'll probably have to order on line,  You won't find them at Walmart.  You can get iron at Walmart and B12 sublinguals at Walmart, I think.  If you want chewable iron, though, you'd need to order that online.

I get my multi and calcium citrate tablets at Meijer.  I also like Upcal D, though, which is a calcium citrate powder and I get that from Colonial Medical.  Have to order it online.  I get my iron and C wherever I find it on sale cheap.  Last time I bought those at Meijer.  I do B12 shots and get those at CVS pharmacy.  I take big doses of D3 and order those from vitalady - there are not many places you can get big doses of that.  I get my A and zinc from vitalady, too.

It would be nice and convenient to get all your vitamins at one place, it just doesn't work out that way for many of us.

Kelly, do you do your B12 shots at home or do you have to go to a Dr's office to have them administered?

I would totally give myself monthly or even weekly shots just to keep from having to do the sublingual thing, but going to the Dr's office is too inconvenient.

Cool. Thx. I just didn't know if doctors allowed patients to administer them at home. Although I seem to remember that my aunt used to give them to herself and my grandma, but she worked in a hospital (as an administrator though, not medical personnel).

I figure if I can spend a month giving myself daily lovenox shots in the stomach, I can certainly give myself a B12 shot here and there!

I'll talk to my surgeon about this at my next visit.

It's very common for people do do them themselves at home.
