OT- frustrated and just venting about food choices

Well I learned something new. I had no idea that my vitamin D has lactose in it (or that most are made from sheep. I was under the impression that they are made from plants). I will keep my eyes open for alternatives for you. I buy vegetarian capsules to fill myself but that's for more common supplements.

For another protein source to consider have you tried Quorn? Soy and I do not get along. It took me a long time to figure out why I was having swollen painful breasts until I did an elimination diet. Low and behold it was the soy products. Bums me out as there are some great products available.

I've largely ignored the almond milk and soy milk type products because the protein is typically so low I feel like I'd get as much health benefit if I drank a soda almost. My local Sprouts has a variety of protein powders including ones that contain hemp and other vegetarian choices. I can't say that they are vegan (because it's been a couple years since I looked at their labels) but it's worth a looksee to check the stats on those types of powders. I only suggest them because it might be a way to kick the protein up a notch without having to be eating almost constantly to get the right amount of protein in each day.

I totally feel for you trying to get suggestions and instead being told you don't have a clue what you are talking about (from people who have no idea what they are talking about). Unfortunately, I haven't figured out how to get past those people to the real answers. I left a board a couple years ago because it became so toxic.

Feeling good about yourself and the health choices you make is important to your overall health.

Edited to add this Quorn vegan product I just spotted.

No, no, the vitamin D doesn't have lactose in it, it's made from lanolin, which is like an oil taken from sheep's wool.  And that's what the actual D3 comes from, not the capsules you put it in.

Buying the vegetarian capsules to fill yourself is an interesting idea.  What kinds of supplements do you prepare that way?

I have not tried Quorn but will look into it.

Actually, the sublingual D I was taking has lactose listed on the label.  I've ordered Vitalady's 50K IU though because I've been hovering at 40 when taking 10K a day, so I need to kick it up a notch.

I've done several different supplements; all herbal.  Can't remember off the top of my head all the ones I've done over the years (depending on my needs), but the last one I was taking prior to surgery was cinnamon.  I'm afraid to take it now since low blood sugar is a bigger concern than it was before surgery and cinnamon can really drop it down.

I was reading the Quorn labels and most of their products add powdered egg whites but they do have a burger that is specifically labeled vegan.  I'm not fond of their chik'n products but their "beef" are tasty.

I have known and lived with many vegans. I think it's a very difficult diet to follow. You have to really be committed to cooking. It's not a grab and go diet. I do think they are clueless about your particular needs as an Rny patient. I know about being a person bridging two worlds..I have had that for years being a renal patient. That diet is nothing like a Rny diet.
You are on a lonely path. Your strength is your tenacious energy and your knowledge of what you need  for YOUR body.

I think you're right and I like cooking sometimes but I have some health problems that make it hard to cook sometimes and sometimes I'm just busy or lazy and want something I can grab and go.

I know the people I've talked to aren't familiar with the needs of an RNY patient and I don't expect them to be.  But I would expect people to listen when I explain that due to my RNY I do need more than 40 grams of protein a day.  I think people were feeling threatened in some way by me saying I am not sure I can get enough protein on a vegan diet, and I certainly was not trying to say that no one can, I was saying that I myself might have trouble with it due to my specific dietary needs.

I would imagine you do have a similar situation sometimes.  Don't renal patients typical eat a low protein diet?  So you would have people on one hand telling you that eating a lot of protein is bad for you and people on the other hand telling you that you must eat a whole lot of protein.

Yes low potassium, low protein, low whole grains, low dairy. I also had to modify my vitamins.
All this has changed since I got my new kidney. My diet has totally changed and things I haven't eaten in years I can now eat. Add steroids and you have one mean eating machine.

Kelly, have you thought about proposing a Vegan Forum here on OH? Maybe contacting the powers-that-be would be a good use of trying to meld the 2 needs..... I also agree with another poster who talked about consulting a NUT who's versed in both WLS and vegan life. I'm sorry that others on other boards aren't being supportive or understanding, but you always know you have support here!!!

Hi Kelly...you know I feel your pain on this topic. I did want to share this blog with you - it's one I have followed for recipes for years, and it's really good. My best friend of twenty years was a raw vegetarian for many years due to unresolved digestive issues, and when she moved off that diet after her health imporved she eat a lot from recipes on this site. She is back to a meat inclusive diet now, but like myself we still have our hearts in vegetarianism. She feels like she does better mentally when she eats meat (she struggles with anxiety and depression).

I can't give you any advice on veganism after RnY, but I do have some suggestions for vegan D3 and protein powder.

One of my vegan daughters was D deficient and we went on a search for a vegan D3 supplement. She takes this one: Super Nutrition Vitamin D3.  She takes 2500mg a day, but there's also a 5,000mg option.  We bought it at Vitamin Shoppe.

And here's the vegan protein powder my other daughter uses:  Nutribiotic Rice Protein Powder.  A one heaping tablespoon serving gives her 60 calories and 12g of protein.  They have several flavors.  She has the vanilla, which has no sugar or artificial sweeteners.

They eat a lot of Boca Burgers, although you have to be careful because some varieties have milk in them.   Each 71g Boca Chicken patty has 11g of protein.
