I Think I Disagree With My NUT
So...I spoke with my NUT last week about where my caloric intake should be (we had a phone call). She asked if I had reached my goal weight, which I haven't. So she said to stay between 1,000-1,200 calories a day if I could. She also said not to have more than 90 grams of protein a day.
Period.
I think I have a problem with that.
I've been working out more - Twice a week I take an hour spin class. The other five days I'm on the ellpictical for at least an hour. Three of those five days I have weight training. I get that it's not as much as others, and more than some. But for me it's more.
The past couple of weeks I've been dealing with crashes. The kind you get when you haven't eaten in a while, not "Oh my gosh...crackers!". At first I thought it was just because I hadn't eaten, which usually isn't a problem (I pack my lunch, for example). But when I kept feeling crummy, and my cousin noticed I was off base, I thought maybe it was protein related. So the next time it happened, I tried eating something with more protein. It seemed to have worked. So I've been trying to keep the protein between 120-130g a day, that's seemed to have helped.
I also just had a thought: could it be carb related?
I feel dumb.

If you feel better with more than 90 grams of protein, well, more than 90 grams of protein will not hurt you. Why does your nut not want you to eat more than that?
Please note: I AM NOT A DOCTOR. If you want medical advice, talk to your doctor. Whatever I post, there is probably some surgeon or other health care provider somewhere that disagrees with me. If you want to know what your surgeon thinks, then ask him or her. Check out my blog.
She's thinking because of my height and build I should be at "blah" and "blah". I'm tall, but I'm not framed small. You know what I mean?
I didn't think the world would come crashing to the ground if I opted for 40-50 more grams of protein. Especially if it results in my not chewing anyone's arms off :).

Not getting enough NUTRITION will make you feel awful. Only you can be intimately aware of how you are feeling. Your NUT is not omnipotent, even if they think they are.
The day my NUT announced to the entire surgeon's support group that we would never lose weight if we ate regular dairy products (milk, cheese, yogurt) instead of fat-free, etc was the day I knew she was a lost soul.
I am six plus years post op with a seven pound bounce over Christmas for the first time of being up since I hit maintenance. I know what to do.... UP MY PROTEIN!!!![](http://images.obesityhelp.com/_shared/images/smiley/msn/biggrin2.gif)
Trust your body, listen to it, learn, read and measure your results. You are doing awesome!

unfortuately, many NUTs are not bariatic NUTs and not registered dieticians. They are not properly qualified to know what our bodies need post op. If you are crashing between meals then you aren't eating often enough and need the protein you are getting if not more and less carbs if possible or atleast eat protein anytime you carbs.
It is best to optimize your metabolism, decrease hunger and maintain constant blood sugars is to eat 5 tp 6 small meals per day, every 2 to 3 hours. IF you go longer than that without eating, it is possible that your blood sugars are dropping making you not feel right - hypoglycemia is very common post op and that is the best way to treat it.
you need to eat protein at each meal and snack. If you need 120-130 grams of protein to feel well, then do it. Have you had your labs done recently? What were your total protein and albumin? YOu want your protein to be atleast 7.0 and your albumin to be in the mid 4's. If lower than that , you aren't getting enough protein. Some have more trouble than others absorbing and some need protein drinks to get there levels up

You do weight training. Every time you do that you get those well-known mini-muscle tears that need to heal up before your next session. How does your body heal them? It re-builds the protein-heavy muscles with more protein. Therefore, you need more protein than someone who doesn't do weight training.
You also need something to eat right after exercising. This is when your body realizes it has work to do. The limit on protein would be mainly for people with things like kidney disease where they cannot process that much protein without doing damage due to their disease.
