vitamin D poll

I can't see your whole post because it's highlighted in black for some reason.

There are two vitamin D tests, the 25 hydroxy, which is the one we want, and the 1,25 dihydroxy, which we don't care about.  The 25 hydroxy shows three numbers, the D2, the D3 and the total.  The total there is what mattes and what should be above 80.

The reason different labs use different ranges is because they are not giving the range that research shows is needed for good health.  They are showing the average that their test subjects, usually employees of the lab, tested at.

I hope you can read this.  I wish this glitch could be fixed when I post.  It has no rhyme or reason when it occurs.

Anyway, how many units do we need to take to boost D3 levels?  I can't remember....can D3 be toxic like A if we take too much?

How much you need to boost your level will really depend on you, on how well you absorb vitamin D.  Just keep in mind that most post ops need at least 10,000 IU daily just to maintain their levels.

Yeah, you can take too much D3.  The Vitamin D Councils warns that taking more than 200,000 IU for a period of time could lead to toxicity and that if your level gets above 200, you might begin to develop some symptoms of toxicity.

Vitamin D, 25-Hydroxy
In November:  112
In January:  95.8
I don't take any D except for what is included with my calcium citrate and multi.  My doc has never seen someone with D levels like mine, and I live in sunny southern CA.  Since it fell some in two months, I'm going to check it closely in April and see if I need to start taking a little then.

Sorry Kelly, I just now saw this post. My D level was 96 in December which was my 6 month appt. At 2 months post op it was only 49. That was with taking 5,000 IU in addition to my 2 multis and calcium with vit D. I then bumped it up to 10,000 IU daily in addition to my 2 multi's and calcium. So in 4 months it went from 49 to 96. I have since purchased Vitalady's 50,000 IU capsules and have been taking 1 to 2 per week.

Due for labs soon, but pretty sure my last set said mine was 40.  Doc was thrilled, I was annoyed.  Of course, I started with an undetectable vitamin D a few years ago (under 4 and 4 was the lowest they could detect), so it was an improvement.  Ran out a couple weeks ago and have been waiting on the tax return to stock up for the year, so I won't run out again.  Been taking 10,000 IU per day and since it's not boosting me higher than 40, I'm heading over to Vitalady and get the 50,000 IU dose to really kick it up, I hope.
