Debate topic: Does having RNY actually make it HARDER to lose weight down the line?

This question comes from me knowing a LOT of long-termers who want to take off those last few pounds or lose their bounce. Many do so alongside well-intentioned non-op friends and family.

It seems to me that after a certain point (# of years post-op), those non-ops kick our asses in weight loss. Even in instances where said non-op is a similar size to a post-op starting out.

This leads me to wonder: is there something about OUR process or what our bodies have been through that might make it more difficult (metabolically) to lose weight through traditional means?

I haven't paid that much attention to myself but I do know I see to have a 7 lb. limit. My body will drop 7 lbs. These days no matter how much I KILL myself at the gym, no more than that 7 lbs will come off. And if I stop, the 7 lbs. comes back.

I don't want to open the door to any excuses for not being able to lose weight. I just wonder if the decks are in any way stacked against us in that regard.

I would wonder if it's an effect of messed-up metabolism. Years of dieting/binging cycles plus periods post-op where extremely low caloric intake may have made the body savvy to holding on to lbs for dear life....

I do truly believe that being formerly MO, past yo-yo dieting and then having rapid weight loss after RNY does mess with our metabolism.

I often read people saying that it takes 3500 calories to put on a lb of fat and I think ABSOLUTE RUBBISH in my case.   I am more than capable of putting on 3-5lbs in a week if I really put my mind to it !!!

Having said that, I know I can drop weight if I put my mind to it - I have lost 20lbs of regain since August by sticking STRICTLY to my chosen lifestyle - I checked the carbs, upped the exercise and voila!  Now bear in mind that it has taken about 20 weeks - so not exactly fallen off but, hey, I'll take it!

I feel very strongly about trying to preserve or up our metabolism after WLS and often post about people not taking to liquid diets, 5 day pouch tests etc when trying to kick start weight loss - it just perpetuates the yo yo dieting and very possibly screws the metabolism further - aside from perpetuating the dieting mentality that we should be trying to lose after undergoing major surgery!!!!

Yeah I've recently decided that I want to take off some of my bounce and it is slooooow going.

I weigh on a pretty consistent scale and the swings I see are sometimes mind boggling. One week I gained 5 lbs. and the next I'd lost the whole 7. Now I am still at that weight even though I've been killing it with my intake and workouts.

I want to get myself in condition to do some more extreme stuff (not just for weight loss. I feel very kick ass when I do things, especially in the gym, that most people can't do...it's my ego you see...).

Maybe that'll help?

I posted that also to Kim...

Check her view on exercise and carbs loading ...

What she "preaches" works for me... my body gains when I look at carbs...

That may not be true for some people... but I do believe some of us are supper "crafty" in gaining weight on carbs...

Now - as long as I control carbs and processed foods - I do not need to count calories... and maintain.. but losing... it is very hard...

But - if I exercise - I will gain weight because my sugar would drop and I would get really hungry...
I can do fast walking, yoga, some other - low intensity exercise... hake me run... and I am on my face due to low BS in 10-15 min.

It may not have fallen off as in the beginning but dang Kim 20 lbs in 20 weeks still is awesome to do.  It's sticking to what works for you (general).

I also read the 3500 calories quotes and SMH (specific to me) as this would definitely cause me to put on weight quickly.

http://www.nytimes.com/2011/10/27/health/biological-changes- thwart-weight-loss-efforts-study-finds.html

Someone posted this awhile ago.  It discusses a study done to show that hormones that effect metabolism change while dieting.  Even after the person stops the levels do not go back to their prediet level making it easy to regain the weight.

I am not down the line yet, but from past experience i find a lot of truth in this.  Every time I would try to lose weight it was harder.  Then I would get to a certain point and I couldn't go any lower.  If I went off a tiny bit the weight would creep back on.

This is specific to ME, I can drop weight fairly quickly as long as I'm following the rules.  This doesn't mean everyone is the same which we all know just isn't true including calorie consumption, protein needs, vitamin needs, etc.

Being realistic about a good weight  for each individual, I personally believe some folks are set on weighing a certain amount when it's not doable based on body type, height, bone structure and such.  Whether it's a surgeon's goal weight or personal, it may not be a weight that is going to happen.

I look at your pics Nic and say "no way" she weighs XYZ (can't remember what you said), you just look way smaller than "that number".  So although you would like to see a smaller number, you realize and know that you look fantastic where you are (as do I).  I want some of your curves, LOL.

As of last week's weigh-in I weigh 201 lbs. According to the BMI, I am "obese." This almost seems laughable to me but I try to take it in stride. I would love to have that comfort zone most folks talk of. I don't have the extra five pounds or whatever to "play with." I'm already 20 lbs. above my "danger zone/red light" etc. weight!

So I try to be diligent. I hate the "2." Somedays if I poo really good I achieve 198. That's exciting.
