the easy way out
I guess chemo is the easy way out of cancer too? And insulin is the easy way out of diabetes. The list could go on and on.
I also agree that I did take the easy way out. After pounding my head against a wall for about 20 years and getting nowhere, I finally opened the available door and walked through it. Easy.

I've only gotten one "easy way" comment. Leave it to me to say, "Well, yes. What sort of dumba$$ takes the hard way?" Fortunately it was to someone I never have to see again.
But it's true. Who would continue to take the hard way for everything? With everything else people say the definition of crazy is doing the same thing over and over again expecting different results. But that's what dieting was for most of us.
So if people think I have moved from crazy to lazy...well, I think that is a step up so
to them.

People who say surgery is the easy way have no idea what the are talking about. It is not the easy way. It is the most efficient way to loose weight. And I did it because I was tired of wasting my time and money on crazy diets that don't work.
The easy way would be not to do anything about my weight at all; to just accept the fact that I was going to be heavy the rest of my life and die young.

For me, having surgery WAS the easiest way to lose weight. If there had been an easier way, I would have done that.

I think to the 'normal' person they think RNY or any WLS is the easy way out because they don't honestly know what it involves. They think you just go have the surgery and that is it. They have no CLUE what all goes on behind the scenes...what we have to do to stay alive and healthy every day.
After this weeks Dr. Oz show about WLS I had a coworker approach me and say she saw the show and she had no idea until then all that was involved with the surgery.
It comes down to basic education.
I do love the replies for the easy way out comments.

But why do they think it's bad to take the "easy way out?" Why would it be better to do everything the hard way?

I just think they *think* it is the easy way .Easy as in you go in for an operation and bam you lose weight, they think without diet and exercise.
I honestly think it is the easy way too, because all the other ways were hard for me. It was easy for me to make the decision, get insurance to cover it. I had an easy surgery and an easy time losing weight.
I don't like doing things the hard way.

I don't know so much about the easy way out. I have had to pay strict attention to things that most "normal" people don't. I can't honestly say its easy.
For me tho it was my only hope. I was 450 lbs. I had high blood pressure, sleep apnea, diabetes, high cholesterol, arthritis in almost every load bearing joint. I lived with terrible pain daily.
If someone wants to say I took the easy way out I tell them "you haven't lived my life or walked in my footsteps. How do you know what is or isn't easy for me." So far it has worked but i've only been told that once to my face.
Most people I know have been supportive. Even two ladies who had the same surgery and totally regained their entire loss plus more. One of them said that it was her fault, not the surgery. If I could be stronger than her then I would be able to keep it off. I wanted to cry. She is a sweet elderly lady in my church. I have no idea why she regained, I have know idea what she eats. All I know is when I see her my heart goes out to her.
I wi**** was easy for her. Maybe her initial weight loss was. Maintaining sure isn't or she would never have had regain.
Just my opinion tho. I could be wrong. I imagine this journey is different for each one of us.

Kelly, you read my mind. I was just thinking about this earlier today.
I think people equate surgery as the easy way out because there is a lack of understanding of obesity. People who say it's the easy way seem perfectly fine with watching people diet and exercise ad infinitum. They seem to have a notion that obesity must be punished and we should do things the hardest way possible to make up for our obesity and somehow redeem ourselves.
