OT- anyone make your own laundry detergent?

That is my money saving project for today.  I am not good with math but I figured out that I spend about 12 cents a load on laundry with the cheap detergent I usually use.  If I make my own, it should cost two or three cents a load.  Plus it's better for the environment because the homemade detergent doesn't have as many chemicals in it as the detergent you buy at the store.

At the moment, my whole house is smelling like soap!  It's nice when the house smells clean and I didn't even have to clean anything.

Yes, I do.  I haven't figured the cost out but the batch I made back in the summer for less than $10 lasted over 6 months.  I am single, but average 3-4 loads per week.

That sounds like an awesome idea!! What's the recipe you used?? I wonder if you could add some essential oils to make the fru-fru scents that Seventh Generation has, like lavender or eucalyptus.... I'm a sucker for anything lavender....

You can add essential oil and I think I'm gonna put some eucalyptus in mine.

The recipe I am using calls for one bar of Fels-Naptha laundry soap (found it at Meijer with the bath soap), one cup Arm and Hammer washing soda (not laundry detergent, but found in the aisle with the laundry detergents) and one cup borax.

You chop up the bar of soap (which ought to count as exercise, that stuff is not so easy to cut up), boil a big pot of water, then put the soap pieces in it and simmer until the soap is all dissolved, stirring occasionally.

Meanwhile, you put the cup of borax and cup of washing soda in a five gallon bucket (cost me $4 at mennards).  When the soap is all dissolved, you pour that in the bucket and stir until the powders are all dissolved.  Then you add hot tap water and stir until your bucket is full.

Might I suggest buying a cheap box grater to process the soap? Just an idea.

That would have been easier, for sure.

This is how I make my laundry detergent. You can go to the duggar website and get the receipe. The receipe made (2) 5 gallon buckets. I have used the same detergent for almost a year and it costs me 6$. The only thing is make sure you shake up the detergent bottle before you pour it in the washer.

I saw this idea on Pinterest and I wondered if it worked very well. I might just have to give it a try!

I haven't actually washed any clothes with it yet but I've heard good things about it.  It was easy to make.  and it smells good.
