OT - bought my cow today!

Well, OK, not really, not exactly.  I bought one share in a herd of cows.  It's not a share in an individual cow because if the farmer does that, the Ohio Dept. of Agriculture says he must keep the  milk from each cow separately and only let me have milk from my particular cow.  Um, yeah, how does that work?  Buy 70 separate milk coolers?  So I have on share in a herd of 70 cows.  Which affords me one gallon of milk per week.

I am so thrilled.  It took me forever to find a place to get raw milk. So today I got to bring home my first gallon, and I also got some free range eggs.  And I learned that the farmer has a "cheese guy" that makes cheese with raw milk from the farm and so I will be able to get some cheese that I actually feel good about eating.

I also plan to make yogurt, cottage cheese (for my partner, I can't stand the stuff) and butter.

And.  for Christmas my mother bought me these milk bottles.  They look like the old fashioned bottles the milk man used to deliver.  Know what I mean?  So I'm all excited 'cause my milk looks cute in the fridge.  I guess I'm easy to excite.

It doesn't taste much different, as far as I can tell, except it's whole milk and I'm used to drinking skim.  It's also not homogenized so you have to shake the bottle to mix in the cream before you pour a glass.  It is supposed to be really good for lactose intolerant people because there is an enzyme in milk that helps you digest the lactose but pasteurizing milk kills that enzyme.  So many people that are lactose intolerant do fine with it.  Also, this particular milk comes from a breed of cow that has very small fat molecules in the milk, which apparently are easier to digest.

I mostly just wanted local milk from a small farm where the cows were treated well, but if I could get it raw, even better.  It contains "good bacteria" like yogurt does, only that is also killed when it's pasteurized.

I live on a farm. And am having to bottle feed a calf right now due to her momma not having enough milk to feed her. It's exhausting. But the little heifer gets so excited when I pull the truck up to the corral.  She will run to the truck knowing it's time to eat. We also have free range chickens. We recently planted a bunch of fruit trees and are hoping to have a garden this summer. I can't wait to start canning my own food. Our main protein source is venison.

Kelly, you just need to move to the country  you would love it here.

Blessings

Freakin' awesome!!  You should come live down here.  I am really close to a rural area (mostly a farming county) and really close (about 30 mins) from downtown Charlotte.  I have the best of both worlds.  BUT if I had a bigger space I would so be havin' a farm!

My ponies, donkeys and garden keep me busy enough.

Watch the fat content of your milk.  Even if you pour off the cream that gathers on the top, the rest still has a lot more fat than you are used to.  Hopefully you don't dump on high fat stuff.  go**** is good but way high in calories.  We got raw milk for years when the kids where small and my morning "dessert" was cereal with cream.  Brings back great momories.  You should be able to make great protein ice cream.  Yummmmmmmm

I won't drink lots of it at a time.  right now I am having a protein shake with about 4 oz raw milk and 4 oz cappuccino flavored soy milk, plus protein powder.  It's delicious.
