I recommend the 50,000 IU D3 from vitalady.com.

Usually bottles says D3 or D2, but if they don't, you can check with the manufacturer to find out what it is.

My vitamin D was very, very, very low presurg like 11 i think, my recent tests show me in the mid 20's.  My pcp prescribes me D3 2000 IU three times a day.  I think ill have to order some of that 50,000 IU vitamin d.

Probably not, but the only way to know for sure is to get labs done again and see how much it's gone up.  Some people seem to absorb D3 better than others, so some need more than others.

Thanks Kelly for posting this.....I'm still trying to absorb and retain all the vitamin information and your posts help so much!
I went for my 3 month checkup last week and asked my Dr when they start doing labs. She said not til you're a year out. In my mind that just doesn't seem right, or is that normal?

No, it's not normal and it's a bad idea.  Most docs do labs at three months, six months, nine months and one year.  i would request labs now.  You could have very serious deficiencies by the time you're a year out.

My doc does labs every 3 months, too. I would be very concerned about a surgeon who would wait a YEAR before drawing labs!

My PCP is at a teaching clinic, so I see interns as well as my regular doctors (internist and rhuemy). I am teaching them as I am learning myself. If my experiences help the new doctors learn about labs & expectations after WLS as a PCP, I feel it is all worth it to put myself out there.

My insurance only covers Vit. D labs once every calendar year, so that is out of pocket, but I think it is important and it really isn't that much. Don't let your doctor neglect labs because they aren't covered on insurance. Your health depends on it.

You might be able to get your insurance to cover it more often due to your RNY or if you are or were previously deficient.  But I agree, if they won't pay for it, I would pay for it myself.

After the first year, many docs recommend doing labs just once a year.  I do mine every six months though and that is what my PCP is recommending to her other RNY patients.  She is also using the list of labs I put together for all her RNY patients.  She agrees with me that labs are very important.

Wow.  This is really helpful, Kelly.  I am almost 8 years out and I don't spend a lot of time here unless I have a specific issue.  My Vitamin D was 4.9 (AHHHHHH) and my Dr. followed the standard protocol, and you pointed me toward a better solution. Thanks so much and best of luck to you!!!!!
