Reminder about calcium

Won't absorb it.  You need calcium citrate.

Have you tried chewables?  Or Upcal D, which is a powder?

I have gotten to where I just take the Cal Citrate from Vitamin Shoppe or WM. 2 pills=500mg calcium. They are big but I tolerate them fine.
Question.....DH picked some up for me but they were citrate without the Vit. D in them. Will I absorb them the same? I take dry D3 seperately every day just didn't know if it would make any difference if taking the Citrate without the D.

Yes, you'll absorb them.

We need a good vitamin D level in order to absorb calcium well - at least 80 - but we do not need to take D at the same time as calcium.

Another question about calcium. So I am only 5 weeks out. I see most post ops saying they are taking their calcium already. My surgeon says to wait until month 3 for iron and calcium. Nothing at all about Vit D. I have already switched from my Flinstone vitamins to Centeum silver chewables 2 X's a day and doing B complex liquid 1 x a day and b12 sublingual 1 x a week.

I know part of the reasoning of his to wait on the iron is constipation. Is there really a reason I should be waiting until 3 months out for calcium? Thanks!

The ASMBS says to start iron right after surgery.  They say you can wait up to one month to start calcium but not to wait any longer.

If you take carbonyl iron, it usually does not cause constipation.

What is the dose of the B12 you are taking once a week?

Vitamin D depends on your vitamin D level.  But yours is almost certainly low - almost everyone's is.

Good for you for switching to an adult vitamin!

 Thanks for the quick reply!

For B12 there is 1200 mcg daily in my B complex and I take an additional 500 mcg once a week. I was following my docs recommended doses.

I am going to be ordering some calcibites and iron ASAP. I did check out your link for the ASMBS above.

Thanks for the help! There are many like me who would be lost!

Unless the B complex is a sublingual, you won't be absorbing the B12 from it.  You need 500 mcg B12 a day, not a week.

Your doc's recommendations are scaring me.

Lol, they are scaring me too. The B complex is Natures Harvest liquid that I hold under my tongue for 30 seconds and the B 12 is sublingual. Should i use both the B complex and the B12 daily then?

OK, the B Complex is sublingual too then.  Sub = under, lingual = tongue.  I feel a little better now.  So you don't need to do the B12 daily as long as you do the B complex.

Okay.  Makes me feel a little better.

I know you have posted a daily schedule of vitamins before but I can't find the post. Any way you could repost it? I am still having a little trouble figuring out when to take them all.

I'll get the iron, calcium & dry D3 ordered tonight.  Thanks again!
