Debate topic: whose fault is it if a child is obese?

Ohhh...I'm not without my wrongdoing.

I am just good at recognizing when I do wrong.

Far too often I let my food addiction manifest through them. I let them eat stuff they shouldn't so I can have a "bite." Or I'll suggest a snack so we can "share." Doesn't happen that often anymore but when I caught onto what I was doing, what I was letting MY addiction do, I became more diligent about not doing it. It's not fair to them and not good for me.

See, I don't think loving ourselves means we don't want to change or grow.  I can love my intelligence but want to learn more.  I can love my body but want it to be healthier.  I can love my family but still want to improve our relationships and get more connected.

I think the message we want to give our kids is probably something like "Your body is a magnificent thing and we need to take good care of it because we love it so much."

Yes, that is what I say (verbatim). And to my girls it tends to read as, "Ok, I love myself the way I am. No need to change anything."

So it's a matter of getting the message acrossin a way that is accurate, respectful and doesn't mess them up. Perhaps I'm being a bit too ambitious.

do anaologies work with your kids?

Have you ever seen an apple tree early in the summer when it has pretty white flowers all over it?  It's beautiful, right?  We love it that way.  But we also want to take care of it so that those flowers turn into beautiful shiny red apples.

I do know some parents who feed their children total junk, ALL THE TIME. breakfast, lunch, dinner. some of the kids are totally skinny, some are huge. so yes, it's more then one variable, but eventually it will catch up with them.

i think 'mommy guilt' can be natural. however if you are doing the right steps then that is all a mommy can do. and i TOTALLY agree with you about how it should be that because we love ourselves we want to do the right things with our bodies. i'm reading women, food and god right now and it is talking about that

I think childhood obesity is affected by  many factors.  Certainly with young children, parents have a lot of control over what they eat.  If your three year old is seriously overweight and you feed her soda and cookies every day, yeah, it might be your fault.  However, older kids can get food on their own.  And of course obesity can be caused by numerous medical conditions, too.

I would say the fast food industry, advertising, unhealthy school lunches, lack of nutritional education in schools, lack of nutritional education by pediatricians, parents, other caregivers and obese children themselves all share some of the blame.

I thin you're right. I think we need to throw capitalism in there too. Capitalism is responsible for many of the world's ailments. When we start seeing people as holistic beings instead of cash cows, perhaps we'll do something about diseases, including obesity, instead of creating an environment where said diseases can continue to generate income for businesses.

Let's blame this culture, too, in which we value doing things as quickly as possible (fast food) and don't value "women's work" like cooking healthy foods.

And let's blame this society in which kids are encouraged to be as sedentary as possible.  Some kids get no recess at school, some get little PE classes, they are expected to sit still at school all day, then for fun they are given TV and video games and computers instead of toys to play with outside.
