First, let's disspell the common myth. Yes, your body CAN use the protein from hot protein drinks, even if the drink is hotter than 130 degrees. Mkay? Lovely!

For many, cold protein drinks are problematic. I mean think about it: your stomach is already TRAUMATIZED (you know...having been severed and whatnot) and then you want to give it cold stuff??? For those that tolerate cold drinks well...congrats! It's a blessing.

To others, warm drinks are oh so soothing. So making a hot protein drink seems a natural fit. Today on Bariatric Foodie I give a tutorial on a quick, easy, and darn-near-foolproof way to make hot protein drinks. I hope this gets some of you to exploring the many and varied flavors they have to offer.

Enjoy! http://bariatricfoodie.blogspot.com/2011/12/bf-basics-how-to -make-hot-protein-drink.html

I've been just loving hot protein drinks lately.  I do find some brands seem to work better - some almost always seem to clump up on me no matter how I try to mix them.  But hot drinks are so good on cold days... and a little fat free whipped cream on top makes them even better!

Kelly, which brands clump up on you? I've used a bunch of different brands and so long as I do it this way it turns out fine, but I'd love to know so I can avoid those with my hot drinks!

I used Pure Protein in the drink in the post. I like that stuff a lot. The chocolate flavor is a bit more chocolatey in my opinion.

The CVS vanilla clumped up pretty bad.  And my Syntrax Nectar cappuccino, which I LOVE cold, got a few lumps when I tried it hot but not nearly as bad as the CVS one.

I usually use Chike or Optimum Nutrition in my hot drinks.  I've never tried the Pure Protein.

I wondered about the CVS ones in hot drinks. I usually keep a few packets at work for "emergencies" (and I have a single serve blender in my overhead bin).

Thanks for the heads up!

I think I will make some hot protein cocoa today! I tolerate the cold stuff just fine, which I'm glad about, but I'm in the mood for something warm and comforting.

Thank you!

I haven't tried to make hot protein drinks yet. Mostly because I hadn't even THOUGHT of it until I saw this thread.

But now that I have heard the idea, and I've heard the problems you're running into, I have to ask a question. (It's the sort of question that one might expect from a totally inexperienced newbie such as myself, so here goes...)

Why not mix the powder into COLD milk, and then dissolve it nicely without lumps, and THEN heat it up? Does it taste awful? Does the heat kill the protein? Does it create new lumps? Just wondering. I need the voice of experience before I waste time experimenting!

Good question!

I started out doing that but what happened was that the mix did keep a lot of clumps BUT if you do it in a shaker bottle that is less likely to happen (although when I did it in a shaker bottle, I STILL got more lumps [and floaties] than I do using the method I posted about).

I use cold milk to make my paste and when I do protein demos for people (many of whom originally think my method is off-putting) I always get the same response: "if I didn't see you make it, i wouldn't know there is protein in it."

I've never achieved that level of mixing by adding all cold liquid then heating. But really it all depends on what works for you. There are as many methods to mixing up a drink as stars in the sky. But I hope the post at least empowers you and others to give it a try!
