how do you know it's right?

Someone recently commented on one of my posts that she was lucky because she got all the correct info from her surgeon.  I'm not posting this to challenge her statement, but I'm just wondering now.  How do you all make sure you're getting correct info from your docs?

What I do is compare what they say to what organizations like the ASMBS, the Vitamin D Council, the Linus Pauling Institute, the Mayo Clinic and places like that say on subjects.  I consider what other people tell me they've been told by their doctors.  I ask my doctors where they are getting information if I'm not sure about it.  And I consider whether it makes sense or not, based on my knowledge of anatomy and physiology and so forth.  I have a few people whose opinions I really trust, too, and I'll ask them if I am unsure of something my doc has said.  Or I'll ask another doc - I have three docs I see right now, my PCP, my psychiatrist and my back specialist.  So if the psychiatrist says something I"m unsure of, I'll ask my PCP for her opinion.

So.  How do you know you're being given the right info?

Please note: I AM NOT A DOCTOR.  If you want medical advice, talk to your doctor.  Whatever I post, there is probably some surgeon or other health care provider somewhere that disagrees with me.  If you want to know what your surgeon thinks, then ask him or her.    Check out my blog.

Honestly, I pay more attention to folks like you, Andrea and Pam more than my surgeon in terms of info comparison. That is to say I usually compare what YOU guys say to reputable sources. I only see my surgeon once a year. And even then he can be behind the curve. After all he tried to force me to do those green vitamin D gel caps until I brought him the paperwork! I love him dearly but I take everything EVERYONE says with a grain of salt.

Andrea is one of my trusted sources of info.  So is Michelle.  And I know they will both be able to back up anything they say if I ask for references.

Oh... and I think taking everything with a grain of salt is a good idea.  Do take what I say with a grain of salt.  And feel free to question me about anything I say.  I am not offended by questions.

(rolls eyes) really is this all you do? Not every doctor just does the procedure and sends people on their way.

Huh?

No...but stick around this board long enough and you'll find plenty of folks given not only inaccurate, but DANGEROUS information. Flintstone vitamins and the like. So I think a bit of due diligence is in good order. This is our health, after all.

Is what all I do?  Post on OH?  Ask questions?  Think about things?  Discuss things with folks here?  I don't understand your question and I don't think the eye roll was necessary.

You're right--I'll just do the old "hand on the hip" and hold off on the "...luxurious locks"  until the River Card.
