why? why? why?

Sometimes I feel like a three year old, always asking why.  But seriously, don't you want to know?  If your doc tells you that you don't need iron but the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery says you do, and a bunch of RNY vets say you do, don't you want to know why your doc says you don't?  Or if your doc says to take calcium carbonate (like Calrate) but the ASMBS and a bunch of RNY folks say you can't absorb that and need calcium citrate instead, don't you want to know why your doc says to take carbonate?  I do.

Yeah, I might drive my docs crazy.  I don't know, my PCP and my psychiatrist seem pretty accepting of my questions.  I think my PCP actually likes dealing with informed patients that will ask questions and be proactive.  My surgeon did not seem to like it as much but at least put up with it.

But don't you want to know?  A lot of times when I ask someone why there doctor does or says something, they say they don't know.  Don't you want to know why?  And if not, why don't you want to know?

I am glad that I am not the only one to question my doctor and my PCP on things. My PCP at first knew little about WLS, but now he is more informed about this. I bring him articles and gave him the print out on what I can take and not take, Now he researches and giving me articles, I love my PC doctor. My wls doctor said I don't need Iron but my PCP doctor said I did, so I have been taking them anyway. I think we have to question them, this is our bodies and if we don't keep up with it you will ?  Have a Merry Christmas and a Blessed New Year

Its good to question your doctors...they don't know everything. If I didn't question the staff at my bariatric center then I'd be taking calcium carbonate and swallowing my b12!

Hey Kelly. If my multi-vitamin has 36mg of iron in it, do I need more?

The ASMBS says you need 18-27 mg more if you still have periods.  Otherwise, no.  Unless your labs indicate you do.

I love my surgeon and his nurse but last week at my appointment she asked me what I was taking so I tell her.
Multi+prenatal
Calcium, iron, b12...and she looks at me as says "why on earth are you taking a multi AND a prenatal?" um........because the prenatal is in place of the 2nd multi I'd be taking usually. She responds "you don't need two multis unless it's Flintstones you're taking"
I then talk to my surgeon and ask him about blood sugar issues I'm having and he confirms it's RH and then gives me info dated back to 2005!
I'm wondering if they aren't staying current with ASMBS information and up to date on the research and changes in regards to RNY needs? You would think they would need to! A lot of studies, research, changes have taken place in the last 5+ yrs and they're still giving out OLD information that's no longer adequate for what we need!!

If she says you only need one multi OR that Flintstones would be adequate (they aren't, even if you take 10 of them - since they are missing some things altogether, and 10 times zero is still zero), the are NOT keeping up with the ASMBS guidelines.  Which is kind of sad because the guidelines are not hard to read or understand.  I have no medical training and I can understand it easily.  And it doesn't take that long to read the vitamin guidelines.  Good grief, I have portions of it memorized.

At least you are aware of what you need and you are aware that they are giving you old info and that they are not up to date on things.  So you are taking care of yourself.  Maybe you should take them the ASMBS info at your next appt.

I definitely want to know why and always ask.  Some doctors don't mind at all while it seems others are intimidated by being questioned about anything.

I think we need to be pro-active patients. After all, we are paying them plenty for their services.
It's OK to say, "I read that the standard is..." or provide them a copy of the information.
Doctors who are secure will be glad to respond to ANY question.  The only dumb question is the unasked one.

I also think patients will be more compliant if they understand why the doctor instructs them to do certain things.

At least that's my thoughts.

Merry CHRISTmas.

I think you are right about compliance.  Why do something that makes no sense or if you don't understand the importance?  If patients know why they should do it, though, they are more likely to do it.
