Hey Kelly, how about a Mid-Term Exam???
It's Friday. I'm bored. Plus this is all stuff I see people get confused about all the time.
So if you have time, give it a look and see what you know! These are all true or false questions. Any explanation of your answers you want to offer up, please do!
Protein:
Eating a diet high in protein is important because it helps preserve muscle and helps the body lose weight.
Heating protein past 130 degrees makes it completely useless to our bodies.
There are some types of protein that our bodies don’t absorb well and that we should avoid.
Whey protein isolate contains a superior form of protein to whey protein concentrate.
The body cannot absorb more than 30g of protein at one time.
Liquids
The reason we are advised not to eat/drink at the same time is because our pouches will overfill, causing us to vomit.
Drinking the proper amount of water every day helps your body lose weight.
Post-ops are advised to avoid carbonated drinks because they are proven to stretch your pouch and/or your stoma.
Metabolism/Caloric intake
Eating very few calories will always cause you to lose weight.
It is not only the amount of calories, but the kind of calories you take in that causes you to lose weight.
Skipping breakfast doesn’t have an impact on how I burn calories so long as I meet my daily caloric goals.
Behavior/Expectations
Looking to others progress is a good way to determine how my progress will occur.
Stalls can be frequent and common, which is normal when attempting to lose weight.
A weight loss surgery success is a person who has lost 100% of their excess body weight.
A stall and a plateau are different.

True

False.

True
Whey protein isolate contains a superior form of protein to whey protein concentrate.
Eh....sorta true. We absorb isolate a little better but concentrate is good enough. Also, they are both really from the same source - milk - just have been processed a bit differently.
The body cannot absorb more than 30g of protein at one time.
False! So says the ASMBS.
Liquids
The reason we are advised not to eat/drink at the same time is because our pouches will overfill, causing us to vomit.
False.
Drinking the proper amount of water every day helps your body lose weight.
Hmmm.... well, it helps your body function properly, all your organs and stuff, which helps you stay alive. I'm not sure just drinking a lot makes you lose weight, though. So don't think you can just plop down on the couch with your water bottle. If that made people lose weight, I would have lots weight long before I had surgery.
Post-ops are advised to avoid carbonated drinks because they are proven to stretch your pouch and/or your stoma.
False! Popular myth, but untrue.
Metabolism/Caloric intake
Eating very few calories will always cause you to lose weight.
Well, kinda true, kinda not. Eating very few calories will eventually make you lose weight, but in the short term, eating too few calories can cause a stall.
It is not only the amount of calories, but the kind of calories you take in that causes you to lose weight.
True.

True.
A weight loss surgery success is a person who has lost 100% of their excess body weight.
False. I mean, that person is a success, but not the only success. You can lose less than 100% of your excess body weight and still be a success.
A stall and a plateau are different.
I think they are the same. But people define those terms differently. Some people think they are in a stall if they don't lose anything for one whole day. I call it a stall if you haven't lost anything for about a month or more.
