I'm the type that needs to write things out.

#1 eat an early dinner
Not usually
#2 weight yourself daily
yes
#3 eat a boring diet
pretty much
#4 reward yourself
definitely
#5 read diet and exercise tips
only thing I read related to diet is usually OH
#6 eat breakfast
always have a protein drink, most of the time I eat food, too
#7 take snack breaks
always
#8 drink water
for sure
#9 order a la carte
don't eat fast food and most combos come with drinks which I don't drink with meals but when I go out I usually get a meal that includes a salad and vegetables.  I make at least 2 meals out of every meal I have when I go out
#10 choose whole grains
if I eat grains they are usually whole grains but grains aren't a big part of my life
#11 east spicy food
love spicy food
#12 sleep for 6 to 8 hours each night
most nights I get more then that
#13 manage stress
fail
#14 take the stairs
sometimes but not as a habit, I'm pretty lazy
#15 chew thoroughly
I try but can't say I'm perfect at it
#16 walk after meals
again, lazy
#17 keep healthy foods on hand
always but there is junk around, too, because of my daughter
#18 learn to take a joke
I like to think I have a good sense of humor.  I try to laugh a lot
#19 eat protein
no problem there
#20 avoid dinner distractions
don't do good in this department, either.  TV is always on, dogs are begging for food, laptop is nearby

Looks like it is 9 out of 20, with some being kind of iffy.

Only 13 out of 20 for me, but some of them do not apply to me since I ahve no actual "dinner"... just the two meals after my afternoon snack... and, as Kelly pointed out, some of them are somewhat questionable, anyway.  Most of my skinny friends, for example, do NOT eat a boring diet... they eat a FAR more varied diet than I do!

Not to worried about my low score... what I do works for me to maintain what I lost (well, for 4 years so far)...

11/20. Alot I just really don't agree with. The daily weighing when your weight loss slows down would probably do more damage to self-esteem than keep me accountable. Not gonna beat myself up for not doing a bunch of those rules; apparently I'm doing very well on my NUT's rules.

My skinny-minny husband would fare even worse than me.....His eating habits are horrible!

Besides the scale, I'd be interested to know what you found damaging. I thought it was pretty balanced, considering it was written for non-ops (and men at that).

I think the scale thing has the potential to damage self-esteem. Weight fluctuates so much on a daily basis that people can get really hung up on those changes - so why ruin your day for a bad scale reading when OVERALL you're probably doing well?
I didn't criticize the rest of the list, just the daily weighing suggestion. Shouldn't weekly weighings be sufficient to keep one accountable?

Perhaps not so much for non-ops (especially skinny ones). Think about it. If you've never had a weight problem perhaps getting on the scale is not that big of a deal. I dunno. The minds of skinny people confound me. Like...when they are not hungry...they don't eat. I don't get that. ;)

This was a lot of fun to read over and really think about. Thanks, Nik!

I found that I have 18/20. I don't walk after meals and I LOVE eating dinner with my boys watching our favorite shows (dinner table is covered in craft stuff). We interact so much during the day, and I really don't see a problem with it.

I've been maintaining since June, and I love my SF fudge bar almost every night. And I have found that over the past 3 months, I've weighed every day. It's been weird, but it keeps me in check. I fluctuate daily between 157 and 160 and I'm all good with that. When I was in my loss phase, I weighed weekly or biweekly depending on how quickly I was losing. The slower I lost, the less I weighed myself.
