At that low of a number I would get an infusion and after that up your iron. Mine was 26 and had to take 120mg of iron to get it up to 68 it took 3months. Oh and make sure your not taking anything or eating anything with calcium when you take your iron.

I have had problems with my iron for years. I'm a vegetarian and there's just no way to supplement enough.  Bariatric Advantage sells an iron supplement that is palatable and is one of the most effective ones I tried.

I just went for an iron infusion and it was THE EASIEST thing I have ever done. It took 4 hours in all for the infusion, and I had some muscle aches for a day or two after, but i FEEL AMAZING!  You don't know how run down you are until they fix it.

And the best part -- NO MORE ICE CHOMPING!

Hope this helps with your decision.

Oh, by the way, my PCP never sent me for iron infusion or saw any concerns.  I went to the gynecologist for heavy periods (the root of my anemia) and SHE saw my bloodwork and was appalled. She's the one who sent me to the hemotologist.  I owe her a LOT!
