What helped raise your iron level?

Just wondering what worked for you to help raise your iron levels?
Supplementing currently and trying to eat some red meat.

Doctor wants me to try to get level up through diet and supplementation. Think it might be better just to get an infusion done.

Tired as heck, sore, cold and feeling like crap. Iron is a 5.
just wondering what worked for you? I've never been so
Low.

Your iron is 5?  Not your ferritin, but your iron?

Um, I would make an appt with a hematologist ASAP and request infusions.  That's scary low.

Mine was never anywhere near that low.  When it dropped a bit, I increased my carbonyl iron from 50 mg to 75 mg a day.  And I take that with vitamin C.  I don't eat meat, either.  But  mine has always been mid - range, or at least mostly.

Unfortunately I didn't get a copy of my results. Doc just said my iron level is normally 100 and it's 5 and I'm more than likely going to have infusions in the new year. I might get my doctors secretary to fax it to me at work on Monday as more info is always a good thing.

I have never had low iron and I don't take supplements other than 2 flinstone vitamins.  All my labs were normal or so high that they reran them at the lab for the first 18 months.  I rarely eat red meat.  I usually eat turkey, chicken, pork, fat free and reduced fat cheese, Greek yogurt, spinach and other veggies with iron.  Some of my cereals and grains have iron as well.  I have a very short bypass so maybe that is why.  I think if you feel that poorly, I know some people have IV iron and then they feel better.  Good luck and I hope you feel better. Tri

When you say you have a short bypass, what do you mean by that?

my surgeon told me my intestine was bypassed (the part that doesn't absorb food) 100 cm. So where some people have 150cm or 250 cm bypassed mine is considerably less than that. 5 years out I have no teeth or bone issues and my calcium only comes from food. Tri

Wish I knew. I'm up to BA iron 180mg twice a day plus Vitamin C, and my ferritin is still dropping. It was 25 at 18 months and 17 now at two years. My doc doesn't take my iron. Seeing her next Friday to discuss the lab results.

Just upping my dose worked for me. If it had not gone up then they would have done infusions. But thankfully it did go up.
